I have started drinking coffee after years of being a PG Tips man. I normally buy a Starbucks latte on the way to work.

I'd be more than happy to spend time at home in the morning preparing my own coffee. Unfortunately I don't have the room for a standalone machine.

However, I'm happy to spend £££ on getting some decent kit and grinding my own beans and preparing my own.

Could anyone advise me what's the essential kit I need for a latte (I'm happy to spend 10-20mins in the morning and I only need one cup, I'm the only one in my family who drinks coffee) and which brands are the best? Spending on top end stuff is no problem as long as it will last for years and can easily be stored away in a small kitchen cupboard.

I'd also be grateful for links to online sites selling different beans so that I can sample a few different mixes and alight on the best one for me.

Thanks

For starting out, buy an Aeropress (c.£25) and then buy some ground coffee from places like HasBean.

I can't advise on the milk side as I just have a dash from the bottle rather than a hot frothy milkshake like most shop lattes seem to be. But I believe you can buy inexpensive 'frothers'.

Once you've got into the swing of things you can then invest in a burr grinder (and start buying beans) and move up to a proper espresso machine.

(My bean-to-cup machine has been gathering dust since I bought an Aeropress (and a simple cone filter and glass jug combo for >1 cup at a time)).

I wouldn't recommend an aero press for a latte drinker, you need something that'll make a strong espresso.

If you're set on not getting a machine (we have a small delonghi one that barely takes up any space in our cupboard of a kitchen) you'd be best off with a stove top espresso machine like a Bialetti and a separate milk frother. Make sure to get one of the jug ones that heats the milk as well.

As for coffee Has Bean is good. I order bags from a coffee shop from Steampunk Coffee. They have a decent range of interesting things.

It sounds like a lot of faff for one cup a day. I'd recommend finding a better coffee shop on your way to work wink.

For one cup a day get a nespresso machine, it so quick and convenient and doesn't take up much room.

As another relative newbie, I'd also recommend a nespresso. It might not be world class coffee but it's one button and very drinkable - head to the nespresso thread for any more advice on them - I got one from a friend who hadn't used his in months so gave it to me so I don't know which is the one to buy at the moment
