Hi guys,

I'm moving house in the next few weeks and need to buy a new cooker. The width available is only 50cm, which limits me quite a lot.

I want a gas hob (it has gas supply already there for a gas hob), and ideally I'd want an electric fan oven. Now, looking online the only gas hob/electric oven is this

https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/i5gsh1s/indes...

Which doesn't have a fan oven which is pretty naff. So that leads me on to gas hob AND gas oven.

So looking either here
http://ao.com/l/cookers-width_less_than_55_cm/1-26...

or here
https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/st/50-cm-gas-co...

Now, I don't want to spend thousands, but likewise I don't want one I'm frustrated with. I've no idea why some are a lot more expensive than others, so wondering if you might know the differences? I'm clueless with this!!

I'd rather spend £400 instead of £200 if it means I get something that is noticeably better, but don't want to spend £400 if there's not much difference, if that makes sense.

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance!

edit - the cooker currently there (Being taken away) has a gas hob and electric oven I think...but I'm not sure....would there be adequate gas supply for both a hob and an oven (ie connections??)

I've never had a good experience with gas ovens. Personally I would sacrifice the gas hob and go all electric if it widens your choice. I had an electric hob for 8 years. I survived.

I have bad memories of electric hobs from 20yrs ago. So when we moved recently and a ceramic hob was installed I was determined to change it. However after a few days acclimatisation I love it, easy to clean, can get it very low for stews etc, fairly responsive, I wouldn't go back to gas.

Thanks for the responses chaps.

Any preferences from the selection here....?

https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/st/50-cm-electr...

I'm assuming an electric oven doesn't require someone to install it properly, either? Simply plug it in and away you go?

edit - I think one of these 2 could be good options

https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/kdc5422ak/bek...

Or

https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/444443930/bel...

I'm not sure if the £259 one is a fan oven, so would need to check that. But otherwise, seem OK?

Cheers

I can't comment but choose one with a ceramic hob and try to see it before you order. I've been disappointed with perfectly acceptable performance but something looking really cheap and tacky before. Price isn't always a decent guide.

We had a belling dual fuel cooker up until recently. Did a decent job at what ever we threw at it. Looked quite nice too imo

We’ve got a smeg now which is much better but twice as spendy.

Yep, try to see it and fiddle with it to see if bits will fall off and break easily.

Last house move the previous left a horrendous kitchen and oven/hob in place. Took us a year or so to get round to changing it, cheapest of the cheap, horrible 80's stuff but it actually worked pretty well and no different to cooking in a £500 oven if you aren't looking for features that you may not use.

It doesn't look like the £259 Beko has a fan oven but the Belling does. I like the steam clean feature of the Beko (who likes cleaning ovens?). I'd rather the hob controls were at the side of the hob; probably impossibe in a 50cm width though.

Here's a possible alternative:

If you don't already have one, add a slow cooker to your kitchen kit (see the slow cooker recipe thread) - enjoy your new home.

I stand to be corrected but they need wiring in (not plugging in), and I think they need their own special circuit, so if you havent got a cooker socket you would need to instal a new line back to the MCB.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure the cooker he's taking away is a gas hob, but not sure about an electric or gas oven. If it's dual fuel...would the wiring already be in place for an all-electric oven?

Thanks

Again I know very little about electrics but I don't think the electricity supply for Dual Fuel ovens needs to be as powerful as ALL-Electric ovens. In other words an electric-only oven could potentially need to draw more electricity if the Hobs/Oven/Grill are all on the go at the same time, whereas the Dual Fuel ovens only tend to have one oven which is using leccy.

So the supply for Electric-only might need to be higher rated.

Hope that makes sense!

Correct.

It will need it's own circuit. The hobs alone go to 5kw, way above a 13amp. Probably a 30amp circuit.

As far as I know you have to have cookers installed by an electrician. It was the only appliance we weren't allowed to install when I worked on the delivery run of an electrical retailer.

Can you get a 50cm cooker with an induction hob? You'd not miss gas if so.

Thanks guys; I think the best option is to wait until I get the keys, get someone to check what sort of installation is present and go from there!

A dual fuel is probably running on a 20 or 30amp socket.

Can you ask the estate agent just to check with the owner?

I'll try, but they're a pushy bunch of aholes who only seem to get in touch quickly when it benefits them. They really are not very nice. They keep asking for updates (almost accusing me of being slow....when it's not the case). I've been subtle in my question and at the end I said "hopefully you can find this out for me soon, I can then let you know when I get the closing statement of my HTB ISA from my bank so we can continue moving forwards"....

Kind of saying "If you don't let me know, I may hang fire on waiting to tell you this, or may hold on for a few more days just to p*ss you off, basically"

Most appliances will come next day anyway, for a small remuneration. So I'd research a couple of options and order once i had the keys.
