It was a gift, the only English writing is, 2013/01/19/Z, LUOTUOBAINIAN, JINGTAILAN, LUMING-ZHONGGUOHUN.

It smells and tastes like a cross between pure alcohol and drain cleaner (I didn't swallow)

I'm no longer in touch with my benefactor.

Its Baijiu. The tipple of choice to toast new business deals in China. Its can vary from being like an unusual vodka type experience to complete rocket fuel depending on the type and alcohol content.

More than likely yes

It’s not the cheapest baijiou you can get. That is known as Eregoutou and last time i was in Beijing was about £1 for half a litre and seriously vomit inducing.

Some say it's breathtaking and reminds you of coming out of a pool during polar bear plunge.

I had some baijiu at a party a few years ago, I just thought it was a rather rough and foul drink. It had the sort of clear, slightly sweet aroma of a saké but tasted quite bitter. I didn't much like it and it appeared the owner didn't either, given that the bottle was languishing near full.
