Hi

My dad was in the Royal Marines in the 50's and 60's before the end of the Navy Rum Ration in 1970

He still has a taste for rum, and prefers mainly the "navy strength" ones - Pussers / Woods etc.

These apparently are not the same taste that he remembers from the original rum served by the Navy

I'd like to buy him a bottle for his birthday in March

Do any ex matelots on here know which rum the "tot" actually was, and any modern rum that would be the closest match?

According to this article: https://gizmodo.com/a-beginners-guide-to-navy-stre...

Pusser's is about the closest thing you'll get these days. If you want something nice try Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum, smooth, dark & beautiful.

You can get Pussers in 'Naval' strength (not sure whether that's pre or post turning in to grog). Damned if I know where from though as I was shown the website by an ex colleague who was in the Navy when run was still served for special occasions (such as the Argentine surrender when he was down at the Falklands (HMS Yarmouth I think)).

Going a bit off topic here, but I just noticed this:

https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/pussers/pussers-n...

75% Alcohol ! sillydrunk

Even as someone who regularly drinks cask strength whisky at 60+%, I think even I'd struggle with that level....

Not tried the one in your link but I love this, https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/goslings-black-se...

Its nice neat over ice as a slow drink. Its nice to mix but a waste lol.

Burrow, Ive asked a mate of mine who loves his rum and is x matelot, hopefully he will have an idea for you.

Apparently Pussers Navy strength is the one and its not meant to have changed.

Thanks everyone - appreciate all the input / suggestions :-)

I'll try him with some Pussers and see what he thinks

The "original" ones still for sale might have to wait for his 80th birthday in a couple of years at those prices !

You can get the Woods Rum from Morrisons for £22.50.

I decided to try it after reading this thread and, although I have no idea how close it is the the original Navy rum, I like it and will be getting another bottle...

About ten years ago, when in his 80s, my Dad was reminiscing about his time in the RN; he joined in 1937 when still a teenager and served until the Korean War. He mentioned the rum ration so I bought him a bottle of Pusser's Blue Label. He reckoned it was 'spot on'.

I’ve tried the strong one at the factory. Made my lips go numb.

Can’t beat a bit of mount gay if you are on a sensible budget.

Thread from the dead! Bought my bro a bottle of "Gunpowder Srength" from Amazon for his birthday. Opened the box and the bugger fell onto a wood floor, broke off at the neck.
Ordered another one from Amazon, but I don't think my local Amazon bloke delivers on bank holidays.
Shame, because the half bottle left is rather nice!
