I bought some lovely marinated pork ribs the other day from the supermarket. They are in vacuum packing. The use-by date was four days ago. I quite fancy them, and they weren't cheap, but I really, really cannot afford to be ill this weekend!

Opinions!?

Just eat them and say goodbye to your sphincter.

Smell them you fool. We are very good at telling when meat is off.

Then make sure they are cooked through before you eat them.

No way I would eat pork 4 days over - 1-2 maybe.

Are they the precooked variety? If so then they will be pasteurised so have a very long shelf life, months and even years on some products. Being a few days over is a fraction of that life which will have a large safety margin anyway.

If they are raw then I wouldn't risk it and chances are any sniff test would be mitigated by the smell of the marinade.

Good feedback everyone. I’ve decided to play it safe on this one!

Don’t hang around for an update which I’m sure some of you were looking forward to!

What a fanny, really!?!

This is the reason so much food gets wasted when there's usually nothing wrong with it at all.
Last year I opened a packet of ate a packet of chicken slices that were 4 MONTHS after "best before", and they were fine. Scoffed the lot. No ill effects. smile

Totally. 4 days over a vacuum-packed, pre-cooked sell-by date? Get them eaten OP.

Cook them asap, freeze them.

Eat them another day, when you can afford to have the sts should that happen

Hint... best before means safe but might taste like crap.

Use By as per the OPs post means like to be unsafe to eat after.

Use by and best before are two totally different things

You'll be fine! People are very precious about the 'get scared' date on food.

I find sausages taste best when they have the rainbow sheen on them like petrol on water. I'm sure I've gone 3 weeks past SBD on several occasions. I'm still here!

Next time, pick up items from back of the shelf - more often than not, use by dates tend to be longer...

But again, sell by is not the same as use by
