Can anyone who knows wine or champagne suggest a nice 2016 bottle to store for 16 years?

I've been struggling to come up with an interesting christening gift for my soon to be godson. Mumsnet of all places suggested a bottle for them to open when they are 18. Will get a personalised box made up but don't know anything about good wines and what will store well.

Will need to be orderable on line but otherwise anything considered. All help appreciated!

That's like asking what car to store for 16 years, nobody can really answer it. But Champagne is not one of them.
Generally speaking heavier wines age better than lighter ones, for example you're better off keeping a Bordeaux than a Beaujolais.

The most important is to have a cellar to keep it in, it needs to be kept at a constant and low-ish temperature (not a fridge).

Port. That's the winner. I have some 1977 Dows given to me by my Dad that's still going strong 41 years later...

I realise how vague this is and normally hate these kinds of threads but I am clueless. A friend mentioned storage issues so maybe port would be the best option. Any recommendations/suggestions for a good 2016 port?

Agreed - I hope, I've a bottle of port that's as old as me. I'll be 70 next year...

Unless you have a mechanism to store at a temperature of between 10-14c I would go for a spirit (malt/cognac) of some sort.

Whisky is pointless unless it's going to be in a cask. It doesn't age anymore in the bottle.

How about something like a Grange although their storage times are generally 20 years +

After taking on the advice here I think a Whiskey may be the way to go. Recipient has Scottish heritage so probably for the best!

If he's Scotch-descended he'd prefer, er, scotch smile
Whiskey= Irish. Whisky= Scotch.

As others have said a case of Bordeaux is possible but do think about storage. If under the stairs is dark and stable in temperature it'll do fine. Don't put it in the loft or the garage! Or you could pay someone to store it for you IIRC £5 per year per case, join the WineSoc and buy some 2018 en primeur when available?

FFS! mad Scotch only refers to the wonderful alcoholic drink. If you are from Scotland then you are Scottish. You may refer to us as the Scots but we are never, ever Scotch. rant over smile

I thought port was a traditional christening gift.

Not strictly pointless if you can select a malt that will increase in value. Though again, choosing one is a minefield

Nope, but a good port will keep until they are in their 30s.

Scotch people have such a chip on their shoulder sometimes...

No, you'd be better to put £50 in a card for their 18th.

Just for closure I have gone with a Lagavulin 2000 Distillers Edition (bottled 2016 - the lad's birth year).

Thanks for all the help.
