Benefits of visiting the in-laws, the wife and I can escape parental duties for a night in a few weeks.

Looking for a really good meal and somewhere to stay, outside of the City itself, perhaps up to an hour or so from Insch / Inverurie area. If they have rooms too, even better but not essential. Currently tempted by the Kildrummy Inn nr Alford, any other recommendations?

Eat on the Green in Udny Green is worth a trip. Not sure where the nearest accommodation would be though?

Also - it's a bit "funcy" but if its afternoon tea is a fair representation you wouldn't go wrong with Douneside House, Tarland. They have accommodation and there are plenty of great walks in that area, and I seem to recall enjoying the drive.

No personal experience of this one but you could also head out to Ballater and eat at Prince Chales' place The Rothesay Rooms. I think there's other hotels within walking distance for accommodation. Again surrounded by fantastic scenery and a good drive from any direction. It's an easy weekend getaway I keep meaning to do...

Meldrum House in Oldmeldrum also very nice particularly if you play golf, and not much of a drive from Inverurie.

Much appreciated Jambo, Rothesay and Udny both look really good and accommodation looks easy nearby. Cheers!

No probs - please report back!

Don't forget the toy shop if you're in Ballater: https://youtu.be/NzS3AdzZ0Nw

If you need to walk it off the next day go to Loch Muick on the Balmoral estate. Easy (long) walk around the loch or up to 5 Munros baggable in a day. Queen Victoria's modest 7 bedroom hunting "bothy" is at the far end of the loch.
