I've got some chicken breast in the fridge. It's unopened but the date on the pack is about a week ago. Is it still safe or no go?

Cook it rare and you're golden.

This. If it's a week though I'd be surprised if it's not rank.

As above, smell it.

If the smell makes you think "uh-oh", then marinade in lemon juice/whatever and griddle for an hour in the george foreman.

If the smell maks you collapse into a spasam, then roll in breadcrums, deep fry, lob in the bin and open the just-eat app.

I should charge for this advice.

Or just give it to the take away and they will cook it for you.

Well there's no point in wasting it if it's still good. I'll give it a sniff. But out of interest, how long can you keep it for until it's too far gone?

If it is in sealed packaging and it's all puffed up then chuck it, if the packaging is normal, open it up, if there is no obvious fowl (see what I did there!) smell, give it a sniff, if it smells OK then it'll be fine.

As long as you take it out of the fridge a couple of days beforehand to ensure it's up to room temperature you'll be fine

Beware, food poisoning can creep up on you in surprising ways
A friend ate some dodgy poultry and before you can say Throbber, he was posting utter bilge on motoring-themed forums
Good luck
