I know there are certain books for cuisine type or by your fave chef but does anyone have that go to book that they just pick up and leaf through for ideas?

He gets a lot of flak and his more recent 10 minute / 5 ingredient books are pushing it a bit, but Jamie Oliver's earlier books are accessible and inspiring.

Yep and you can pick up a copy at your local charity shop, if fact you should be able to get his whole set!

But not for me hurl

But then you would have to stare at Jamie's smug face every day...

Charity shops though are a good shout, loads in there and for pennies. Take a look at Nigel Slater ones.

Thanks. I like Slater apart from the 8 day pauses between sentences and that stupid reverse spoon pour for the cameras. His food looks decent though and dead simple.

Never considered charity shops. I will now.

Consider getting a Fast Slow pro/Instant Pot.

I use mine loads, half the time nothing more than just chucking in some meat and random seasoning and spices hehe The ability to throw in frozen meat straight out of the freezer helps a lot.

Good Housekeeping Cookery Book.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Housekeeping-Cookery...

Outdated, unsexy, reliable, covers 98% of cooking you are likely to ever do and has some really cracking recipes in it. The cover has long fallen off mine and several of the pages are stuck together. It's not often on the bookshelf as it is referred to frequently.

On account of actual experience cooking his excellent recipes, or his annoying TV persona or his average restaurants?

Yes that is a classic! Loads of recipes, sauces, preserves, the lot. Cooked the tagine out of it last weekend, superb.

Aside from the masses of olive oil and chillies that he seems to like, you can't fault some of the Jamie Oliver cookbooks for ideas and realism.

I know people love to hate him, but he's brought good cooking to the masses. He's great at teaching techniques and flavour combinations.

Delia Smith “How to Cook 1, 2 and 3. Great for basic skills and education.

And as previously mentioned - like him or not but a lot of Jamie Oliver’s books are excellent.

Not in my humble opinion,

I don't have a problem with him, or watching him cook, just can't stand what he does to his food.

He's seems to smother everything in lemon juice, and course herbs.

Again all IMHO. smile

I've bought a couple of books from infinite on Amazon, both were in "very good" condition as described smile

I like Nigel Slater and Hugh FW for tasty stuff you'll have the ingredients for. I got the Leon salad book recently and have had to use Google to work out what they're using.

Selective quoting to avoid answering the question I see.

If you don't like herbs then there is no helping you really!

To be fair he did say course herbs. I'm not a fan of finding branches in my grub either.

Anyway it's been despatched. Should be here Tuesday so I'll have a leave through and see what's what.
