I used to live in Edinburgh about 15 years ago, and things have moved on quite a bit! Heading up soon for the rugby, so need some advice on where to feed the kids in the evening. Don't want chains per se (might do one night) and they are fairly adventurous in their tastes. We're staying in the old town, but don't really mind where we head to.

Any ideas people? Good Italian one night is always good, open to anything the other. Any good cafes in town as well would be apprecaited!

Bread Meats Bread is a great burger place with a decent kids menu iirc.

Illegal Jacks will do kids portions of good tex mex if they're a bit more adventurous.

Loudon's Cafe is good, used to love going there for breakfast when I was in the area.

As the guy above said, you won't get much better than Vittoria's for a family friendly Italian.

Oh, you should also go to Mary's Milk Bar for ice cream, it's sensational. If you're lucky the queue might not be out the door now it's winter smile..

I'll throw a couple of pizza places in as well.

Civarino's which is bang in the middle of town and La Favorita which is on Leith Walk and is also owned by the family that owns Vittoria's. They have a good chippy on Leith Walk as well called Eatalia.

I'd second civerinos for pizza, theres a couple very central for town.

I love a little italian near my flat called 'papavero', nothing fancy, just a nice little place that does good food at reasonable prices, also always families/ kids in.

if looking for a nice restaurant, the scran and scallie, is very family friendly. they even have a small are for kids to play in. but the food is brilliant, its tom kitchins 'gastro pub', not the cheapest place, but lovely food and kid friendly.

Thirded.

The Hot Hot Sausage pizza is amazing, and the Parmesan & rosemary fries with truffle mayo are incredible.

You can take the kids for a meal in almost every restaurant and pub in edinburgh. The problems start if you just want a drink. Kids have to be in for a main meal in a restaurant or pub. A bowl of chips does not qualify. Hotel bars have diffrent licences so the rules are diffrent. Scottish licencing laws are not the same as Englands.
