I have a notion to concoct some delicious snacks.

That's it really.

Are the sort of £50—60 machines value for money, or a waste of time?

All I can comment on is that having bought on at around £5-60 it had plastic trays that shattered pretty quickly. Double the money and they are ABS and stainless steel mesh. Same heater and fan unit but far more resilient.

I only use mine for sundried tomatoes though.

I suppose it depends what you will be using it for and how often you plan to use it.

I bought a cheap £50 job from Amazon (with plastic trays which seem to be surviving well so far). It's used for dehydrating vegetables and marinaded meat to make dehydrated camping meals. It's easily paid back what I spent on it saving me a fortune on buying pre-packed backpacking food.
