Mrs Puggit and I enjoy a margarita or two. We normally shop in Aldi and Sainsburys. Aldi doesn't sell tequila and in Sainsburys it's £28 per litre.
Where can we get semi decent tequila, without a red plastic hat, for a more palatable cost. Gin and vodka can be had for £20 per litre.

Tequila used to be my tipple of choice, Jose Cuervo gold in the square bottle. It used to be quite cheap, certainly comparable with other spirits, until I believe demand starting outstripping supply about 10 years ago. Then it became impossible to find the Cuevo gold in anything but little bottles, not supermarkets anyways. I gave up even trying to find it and the clear tequila never seemed as nice.
So I moved on, to southern comfort, then spiced rum, then rum and more recently gin. Just started on trying to get to grips with whisky again in the last couple of weeks but still not sure about it!
Shame really 'cos I used to really enjoy a nice warming Tequila and orange.
Just looked up the Jose Cuervo on Amazon, £30 a litre now. Sure I never used to spend that much on a bottle, nearer £20 IIRC.

Hi there,
One of the best out there has to be El Jimador.
At the moment you can pick up the Blanco (unaged) and the Reposado (lightly aged) for £17 per bottle at Asda (usual price is £20).
El Jimador is a 100% Blue Agave Tequila whereas most others at this price are 'mixtos'
This site has a great article explaining the difference
http://www.ianchadwick.com/tequila/pure_mixto.htm
If you have a few quid then stepping up to its bigger brother Herradura is well worth it.
I'm lucky enough to work with this brand everyday but am certainly not biased El Jimador is cracking liquid for the price.
Regards
Tim

I can recommend jura malt, really smooth, mild almost fruity tasting malt. I know fSo I moved on, to southern comfort, then spiced rum, then rum and more recently gin. Just started on trying to get to grips with whisky again in the last couple of weeks but still not sure about it!

k all about whisky but I like that one...Currently enjoying working my way through a bottle of Fortaleza Reposado - the smoothest tequila Ive ever tasted. Very light in colour despite being aged, no idea of the £ as it was a gift but it tastes expensive
Of the tequilas available in the supermarket I always found Sauza to be much better, and smoother, than Cuervo or Sierra.
I prefer blanco for mixing (Margaritas), reposado for sipping. Seems many think blanco/silver is automatically inferior to reposado/gold as Ive had a few bottles of Cuervo gold as gifts and been told 'dont worry, its the good one'...each have their place in my cupboard.
Patron silver is another fave for Margaritas, tend to pick up a bottle in duty free if Im in the USA on holiday. Finished a bottle of Olmeca Altos reposado recently, enjoyed that also for the money and would recommend.
We like a tequila in our house.....
