It's Summer here and my first ever tomato crop has grown to bonkers level.

They're delicious and I eat some everyday but over the next 3 or 4 weeks there'll be hundreds of 'em, can eating too many be bad for me?

Wouldn't have thought so.

Unless you've grown them in, or with the aid of, something nasty?

Both my parents avoided them as they found it contributed to joint pain, however I eat loads over Summer (allotment) and have never had any issues.

Eat away, what could go wrong? Add some spring onion, feta cheese, cucumber, peppers if you have them, and olive oil, and you've got yourself a delicious Shopska salad.

Only those with a nightshades intolerance should have an issue.
As with all things, the dose makes the poison.

Make them into soup and freeze it?

The best soup I ever had was made from surplus home-grown tomatos.

An excess of anything is not good for you, next time grow from seed and stagger the sowing times.

That reminds me they used to think they were poisonous

A nickname for the fruit was the “poison apple” because it was thought that aristocrats got sick and died after eating them, but the truth of the matter was that wealthy Europeans used pewter plates, which were high in lead content. Because tomatoes are so high in acidity, when placed on this particular tableware, the fruit would leach lead from the plate, resulting in many deaths from lead poisoning. No one made this connection between plate and poison at the time; the tomato was picked as the culprit.

I'm still alive !

Thanks for all the input.
Only eating about 6 a day as they ripen but there's a massive load that'll be ready over the next two to three weeks.

I can't be arsed with sauces or soups so just making salads and sandwiches

Well, TBH, it's only potatoes you shouldn't eat an excess of - look what happened to Brian Harvey, he ran himself over! https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1495761/Harvey-bl...
