I always de-vein raw prawns - run a sharp knife along the "back", pull out anything nasty looking and rinse well. Every prawn I've ever done this to had the intestine along the back - i.e. the outside of the curve.

I just bought some today from the supermarket and they all have a vein on the inside of the curve. They had shells on, so the vein is definitely on the same side as the legs.

Have I just bought a different species of Prawn (which I've never seen before), or is this some kind of mutation caused by global warming / Brexit / intensive farming / plastic in the oceans / Oestrogen in the water from contraceptive pills / natural selection?

I always back split prawns, no gut no problem it just means they have been purged. The small line on the underside (leg side) is their circulatory vein and not a digestive tract AFAIA.

yes

The 'gut' still won't make you ill. Just bad presentation.
On fresh uncooked prawns and crayfish, take the middle paddle of the tail fan and twist to left and right. Then gently pull away. This bring the intestinal tract with it . ( also can be used to kill crayfish without a knife) wink

P.S... How's the crayfishing going Big Al ?
