Thermometer..what do you all suggest?
Discussion
I'm contemplating buying one. what do people here suggest?
I want something inexpensive (under £20). the main reason i want to buy one is so that i can make fried chicken at home.. so making sure the oil temp is right. But then I'd love to use one for cooking roast and trying the reverse sear method for steaks, so i guess that means buying something thats attached to a cable which you can put by the oven.
I would imagine that the oven thermometers cannot be used in the same way as one that's for being put in a pot of hot oil??
Any input from people who have bought ones here?
Americas test kitchen has done a great review of several.

I'm very happy with my Thermopen (as mentioned in your YouTube link) and they can currently be purchased from the makers Ebay site (ETI Ltd) for £30. Okay, I know it's over budget, but it's good!I want something inexpensive (under £20). the main reason i want to buy one is so that i can make fried chicken at home.. so making sure the oil temp is right. They are also selling a discontinued oven thermometer for a silly price - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cooking-Food-Oven-Therm... It looks like a short cable on the probe, but you'd probably be able to buy a longer one cheaply if it was too short.
I also have (a couple) of thermopens and while they are good I have found a couple of negatives. Batteries are a bit awkward to change, the cap has a silicon seal on it for waterproofing but this makes it very difficult to remove without churning up the soft plastic cap. Plus the batteries are the large button type so a few quid to replace. And, as it doesn't have an auto off it you leave the probe arm out they go flat easily.
Secondly the probe arm itself it pretty stiff (on three I've had, to the point where one is bent) and adjusting means breaking a warranty seal.
ETI is good stuff, I've been buying probes, thermometers and data loggers from them for years but for home use there are much cheaper options on amazon and ebay.
Edit to add: the only reason I keep buying them is they come with a calibration certificate that EHP's like.

I've got the Heston Blumenthal one, bought it on some black Friday offer or something for half price? I've had a few and they invariably broke-even decent make ones.
The HB one is quite expensive but it works absolutely brilliantly. Excellent for frying if that's what you're after, comes with a pan clip and helps me with his thrice cooked chip recipe. It helped cook an amazing Roast Pork on Sunday, it has an outer thermometer that keeps check of the oven temp, an inner one for the meat and gives bang accurate cooking times for how long left. Very handy on your ovens but indispensable for the BBQ.
Wouldn't be without it.

We have the older version of this for checking oil temps. Works great and inexpensive.

Mine turns itself off?!?! Usually at an inopportune moment so I have to close and reopen it but other that that another vote for Thermopens. To the OP though, you need different thermometers for different uses. The Thermopen is great for spot checking stuff, like a piece of meat, oil in a fryer, sugar / caramel etc. But for doing stuff like reverse sear you need a thermometer that you leave in whilst it's in the oven. For that I have BBQ thermometer that I got from Aldi, been pretty good so far.
Deffo Thermapen for me and yes, mine switches off too, once idle for a while - so perhaps a revised version?
I have a cheap knock-off thermapen a few years ago (6 to be precise) and the waterproofing failed quite quickly. Real thing has been going 6 years strong and is all I'd ever want from it.

No, but I did watch a lot of videos on YT when it first came out and it seemed to be a great device. I already had the GrillEye so it didn’t end up buying it. Du1point8 said:
That's exactly what I've been looking for, I wonder if Father Christmas thinks I've been a good boy this year

It's out of budget I admit, but will cover the range comfortably. I'm happy with mine!
