Unlike my dad, what I know about whisky could be written on the one of Welshy's V5's for Porsche 944's hehe . Unfortunately he is no longer around so I cannot ask him what I am about to ask here.

A very good mate of mine is approaching his 40th and drinks whisky. I'd like to buy him a nice bottle (budget up to £100) but I do not know where to start. He likes Blended and Single Malts, which doesn't help at all.

Can anyone here provide any suggestions for a nice whisky that I could buy him?

TIA.

Any idea what he drinks? Whisky is extremely varied.

OP, as an alternative (and assuming your mate isn't already a member), you could look at getting him membership of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

My dad is a whisky lover and joined years ago, and has been introduced to all manner of whisky - like the Wine Society, they also have a number of their own.

Or you could get him a proper day out whisky tasting somewhere so he can pick his own.

If you don't know what he likes Highland Park is a pretty safe bet and damned good too. A standard bottle will be around £30(in fact £25 in Asda that's a good price). For £100 you will get something a little more up their range.

Or buy the bottle and a couple of nice glasses too.

Have you seen this thread - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... It might leave you more confused but there are some great recommendations in there.

Or, wait for Friday and watch TheWhiskyBroker on Facebook - he has some great bottlings which he announces for Friday sales. His website is here: https://www.whiskybroker.co.uk/ It's where the PH whisky octaves are currently 'resting' pending bottling (reminds me, must send Lefty an email!).

Without knowing his exact preferences I'd suggest a couple of cheaper and slightly unusual indies

https://www.thompsonbrosdistillers.com/product/cam... is absolutely brilliant for the price and age.More info https://malt-review.com/2019/10/18/brothers-in-arm...

I'd also recommend the 14 year old Tomintoul from Chortlon https://chorltonwhisky.co.uk/uncategorized/chorlto...

As previously mentioned Whiskybroker offer some really good value single casks. You'd not go wrong just picking a couple of bottles you like the look of.

My tuppence, if he says he likes blended and single malts it sounds to me (and I could be very wrong) that he probably prefers a smoother whisky rather than some of the more smoky, peaty ones.

Two or three I would suggest would be:

Macallan 15 year or 18 year
Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve

The Dalmore can be a little divisive but it has character and a bit of a smoky edge to the smoothness. The Macallans are probably the whisky equivalent of Rolex - good solid quality.

Without doubt Glengoyne 18y/o. Absolutely perfect all-rounder. Around £75.

Have a look at some reviews, there seems to be a lot in agreement.

Apparently the 21y/o is even better, but slightly over budget at £112.

Both available on Amazon too.

Have a browse of the SMWS website - while you need to be a member to buy, I’m sure there’s enough of us on here to arrange to get one bought and shipped for you.

These are single cask, so you’re buying something very unique no matter what you go for.
