If you want proper rum as opposed to the spiced stuff which a proper rum drinker (such as myself) wouldn't particularly like, I would go Pussers or Woods.

This is for a female so not sure naval rum would be her thing! So might need to stick to spiced ones

Agreed. Really good sipping rum.

It's what my cousins from Venezuela bring over too, well regarded there also (so not just an export for white people).

It's got a really sweet caramel/vanilla hint to it which makes it easy to drink, even for people who don't normally like strong spirits.

Proper rum drinker laugh Given that he's quoted two spiced rums...

I like Chairman's Reserve OP. Spiced but different to the two you mentioned.

I had a nice Venezuelan rum at the Dorchester once, no idea the name, you could ring up Alain Ducasse and ask?

Otherwise some Mount Gay rum and buy it with 5 vanilla pods which they can use it to infuse the rum over 2 to 3 months and would be slightly novel. Although I don't like stuff like spiced rum I went on my friends boat on the Isle of White this summer and he had a bottle of vanilla rum on board. Or rather he didhave a bottle of rum onboard. It was fantastic, once you start you can't stop sort of thing. He almost made me walk the plank next morning.

In that price range I’d go for El Dorado 12 year old, lovely stuff.

Anything from Foursquare is ‘proper’ rum. Have a Zinfandel cask one that is pretty good stuff, not sure how much it was or whether it’s still available. I think it was part of their ‘cask’ series. Doorlys 12 year old is also from the same house and very decent. I’d rummage for prices....

Edited to add, none of the Foursquare stable rums have added sugar.. read it up.. so for under £40 I’d go with https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/r-l-seales/r-l-se...

And for under £35 I’d go for https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/doorlys-xo-rum/?r...

Get her a bottle of this

https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/24202/admiral-...

Now its 75% alcohol but goes very nice with ginger beer or coke zero. It can be drank neat but it knocks you for 6 fairly sharpish.

They also do a non batst crazy version, old j gold spiced, priced at about 20 quid and available in asda, again very nice and she will love this of she likes kraken etc.

The normal versions of this are sooooo sweet!

This is the best rum I've had for cocktails:
