Can anyone personally recommend any decent wine from the budget supermarkets?

I tried the Toro Loco from Aldi for £3.80 ish, wasnt over impressed really. Their Gavi is quite palatable though but a bit more pricy.

Any others?

Thanks

Our Lidl has a Malbec rosé which is really nice summer's day garden wine, and as supping white, they have a decent Albariño. Occasionally they have a Picpoul de Pinet which is great, and similarly Aldi has an Aussie Riesling which is terrific.

Lidl, we drink the italian red Puglia. £5.75 a bottle in Scotland. Probably cheaper down south. Tesco do a version but we prefer the Lidl one.

I quite like the Aimone from Aldi. I’ve just looked and it says no longer available. Not sure if it’s been discontinued? I’ve still got a few cases to get through though!

I think that was mentioned in the Aldi thread. Couldnt find it again in there though hence this thread.
I think the Stellenbosch cab sauv 6.99 might have been mentioned. Might have to risk it.

For the cheaper end of the scale Lidl do a wine of the week with 30% off which normally end up £3-4. Tried a few now and found them to be pretty decent for the price

Slightly more expensive:

£3.88 is exactly £1 worth of wine (inc the bottle and transport).
It’s usually worth paying a bit more as the duty is a flat rate.

I mentioned this on the other thread after finding it for 7 euros (I live on the Continent). It's recently gone up to 10 euros here, but even at your 11 quid it's an excellent bottle of wine and I strongly recommend it.

White: Aldi's ExquisiteTouraine Savuignon Blanc £5.99 and Limestone German Riesling also £5.99 (dry, not sweet).
Red: Agree that Cotes du Rhone at £4.99 is great - probably best value red wine in Aldi. The Baron Amarillo Rioja at £5.49 pretty good if you like that style. The £4.49 Fire Tree Nero D'Avola I found a little sweet but if you like new world style red wines, this italian offering is good value.

In Aldi, the Iron Horse Shiraz from the Barossa Valley is solid at £6.99 for an everyday option. Quite heavy, but great as an accompaniment to hearty beef of lamb stews.

Is that the Peuceta Primitivo? Superb stuff, I've tried many more Primitivos/Zinfandels and keep coming back to this.

Aldi's Touraine Savuignon is delicious (similar to Voignier). I recommend this on it's own on the patio in the sun, maybe with some nibbles.
For red, I also like the Cotes Du Rhone, but find any of their Cabernet's are quite quiffable!

I like Animus red and Animus Vinho Verde.

For the money, they're just fine for light recreational enjoyment .

Quick heads up, this is the wine of the week at Lidl and only £6.79! picked up a bottle tonight and they had a whole pallet of the stuff so might go back for another next week (you have until Thursday)

Just drinking a Californian called The Wrangler atm. Very nice and under 7 bucks.

To be fair, I'd struggle to find a bad wine at Aldi.

I remember when the first Lidl opened here. Busloads of Edinburgh's middle classes set upon it to stock up cause they were in the know.

That sounds like a proper bargain. To be honest, it justifies panic buying as far as I'm concerned. smile
