Not a big whiskey drinker.
But just used the last of the bottle i have .a glenfiddich single malt 12 year old which is a nice one. But obviously not top drawer.
Prior to that i had a midleton which came in a wooden box that i won in a work raffle. That was top drawer but 100 quid a bottle!
Can anyone recommend a bottle thats not too harsh or too peaty please.
This is to drink. Not mix. Thanks!

Jura superstition is an excellent tipple in that price range. It's sweet enough to convert even the most ardent hater of whiskey.

Glenmorangie 10 year old
Bowmore 12 year old
Arberlour 12 year old

All three make me happy for under 30 quid. smile

Jura Journey is currently £22 at Asda. Well worth it. Not too peaty.
If you can find Shackleton whisky this is also a good tasting drink.

Glenmorangie 10 - I think this is a perfect 'starter' for those who 'don't like whisky'. Can't go wrong with this.
Old Pulteney 12 - Gentle but a bit more complex than Glenmorangie absolute bargain when at £25
Highland Park 12 Not what it was but lightly peated and a good jumping off point for the peaty beasties
Glen Scotia - Non age statement sometimes on offer under £30 Campbeltown malt - really nice dram

Monkey Shoulder - a blended malt but pretty decent

The Ben Bracken malts from Lidl are decent for the price and a fair reflection of their origins Speyside, Highland and Islay. Be interesting to know which distillery is responsible for them - suspect Ben Nevis may be the Highland.

If you are after something similar This is a good shout, one of the 3 Malts in it is glenfiddich
Another one of the three “ Balvenie” is made next door to glenfiddich & is a good dram too

Drive it fix it repeat

Just finished a bottle of this I was gifted at Christmas. I'm no hardened scotch drinker but enjoy a drop now and then, found it enjoyable but after having some more strong flavoured bottles found it very easy drinking.

Personally I have a soft spot for some jaimesons, hardly the most complex drink but to me its lovely.

Springbank 10 year old would be spot on for you. Think it is about a tenner over your budget, but genuinely worth it, in my opinion.

I thought that too but I've never seen it less than £35. Hence why I listed the Glen Scotia
£35 seems to be a sweet spot with so many nice ones at this price point. Glendronach 12, Bunnahabhain 12, Abelour A'bunadh (when on offer)

I'm really not a whisky drinker, but was given a bottle of this and happily have a little every now and again.

This is how I tend to learn what I like in Whiskies - give a bottle that's on offer for this price of less a go as I'm certainly not a learned connoisseur.

Laphroag select and Talisker storm are both under that in ASDA just now (might not be to your taste)

Jura journey as mentioned above (mrs bought me a bottle from Tesco today as it was on offer at same price as ASDA) is a great choice and in my glass right now.

Finished my monkey shoulder last night, so can also recomend that

I also quite like Aerstone - prefer the land cask, but the sea cask might be a safer bet.

I'd really recommend trying Penderyn, the Welsh Whisky.

Thanks for all the recommendations. My local shop under the lockdown is asda or marks and sparks. So when i go in asda i will open this thread and report back.
Enjoy this nice time to have a drink at home. Miss the pub a bit now though!
My best
David.

Me too - I've recently discovered Black Barrel - @£35 it's slightly above budget, but I'm a fan

Dalmore 12 is my favourite scotch I've had. I'm leaning more towards Bourbon now though, Wild Turkey Rare Breed. lick

Whisky tasting is a fun hobby and we're blessed in the UK to have easy access to the produce of so many distilleries, but there's a lot of expensive shops out there and most of what you get in the supermarket is bland. If you don't like peaty drams then avoid Islay malts especially Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavullin but I'd say you're missing some of the best drams, no scratch that, some of the best drinks out there. There are slim pickings at sub £30 and if you're buying from a supermarket try to get on offer. For the budget and requirements I'd be looking at:

Jura
Talisker
Ardmore
Auchentoshan
Aberlour

£40 would give you a much wider choice so you could include distilleries like:

Clynelish
Glenfarclas
Benriach

Och there's loads, try some! smile
