Has anyone bought a food mixer and can give some feedback? They seem to have a broad spread on pricing.

Kitchen aid is the best by a mile. Made like a solid stone and itll outlast you. I got mine like that one in your link for £300.

Costco sell them as low as £270, possibly 320 right now. I wouldnt pay 600.

Have a look at Kenwood as well. Not as trendy but just compare motor specs.

The cheaper kitchenaids (The classic I think) have plastic gears now unfortunately, I think the equivalent Kenwoods are a bit more robust and are also a tad more practical (eg the bowl guard is more effective). You can use reverse spiral dough hooks in some of the kenwoods but you can't with the cheaper kitchenaids for example. It's a much better dough hook than the standard J hooks. I don't know if the artisan range can take them, it might only be their more professional range that does

The really cheap one you linked I would expect to die shortly after its warranty expires- a decent kenwood or kitchenaid should last a long time.

If you intend to knead a lot of dough then the bigger ones with about 7l bowls are better again at kneading than the 4.6l sized ones

If you aren't doing much dough though and using it for general mixing, whisking, etc etc then you would probably be fine with the sub £300 ones

Absolutely... I think the kitchen aids are just a fashion accessory albeit a very well made one. Kenwood chefs are fantastic, and generally cheaper than KA

The one I had was a metal drive from the motor into a plastic worm drive into final metal gearing at the head.

The worm drive wore out and was replaced twice in 5 years daily use.

The theory being the worm drive which is quick and easy to replace wears before any motor or final drive damage.

In a domestic setting this is just a bit of a PITA

Just a thought, but if you’re buying it to make dough, unless you go for a proper spiral they’re all a bit useless !

eBay generally has a good selection of classic Kenwood Chefs for absolute peanuts.

I've just bought the wife a KitchenAid Artisan Mixer 4.8L Starry Night 5KSM125BSN for £329 (https://www.ecookshop.co.uk/ecookshop/product.asp?pid=5KSM125BSN)

I think its last years model due to the colour but the wife isnt fussed.

Get one that has a good grinding attachment so you can make minced meat for burgers and so on.

I bought my wife the KitchenAid artisan just over 5 years ago, it's had plenty of use and we can't fault it.

Bought it from Dawsons dept. store online (who I think might be ecookshop?) and paid £385, that included an additional glass bowl as well as the stainless steel bowl included as standard.

Yes, it was bought partly as it looks nice sitting on the worktop, but it is also as functional as it looks.

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like a kenwood or a kitchenaid.

Initial research suggests I'm a bit late to the party as many suppliers are out of stock. Or they're made in the far east and being inevitably delayed.

Another Kenwood owner here and been very happy with it.

Asked the same question when bought mine and general opinion was that Kenwood had stronger motor/gears than KitchenAid without the premium price for the badge (although do think the KA looks better)

I have a Kenwood Chef XL. It gets used a few times a week for breadmaking. Excellent unit, and has metal gears. 450 quid and it has a 10 year parts and labour warranty from John Lewis.

I have an early 70s Kenwood Chef that my mum bought new. Last year it had a full service, gearbox rebuild, new flex etc for about £120. I expect to get many more years out of it. I’d rather have this than a new one.

Thanks for the advice, just ordered a Kenwood KVC3110S from Currys, probably not the cheapest at £319 but they can deliver tomorrow and it comes with a 5 yr guarantee. Lots of cheaper places advertising but all out of stock.

First use will be cantuccini biscuits.
