I tried it yesterday. It was showing a 2 miles radius, now they have changed it to 5.

My local pub (well, it's not my local, it's closest to me) is on the list. It's nothing special, but the food is fine. So we'll give it ago and see what it's like. We've not eaten out since February.

Can't believe it contains all the fast food outlets, surely this is counter productive to the new healthy eating campaign being put forward by Boris!?

Thabkfully most local businesses on there so will be using quite often during August.

A couple of my usual restaurants/takeaways are on there. Surprising number who aren't though which I don't understand, surely it's win/win for them??

I don't fully understand the conditions.

"to get 50% off your food and non-alcoholic drinks up to a total value of £10 per person if you eat or drink in"

does this mean the value of the discount is no more than £10? or you can get 50% off if you don't spend more than £10? I don't understand.

version 1
you spend £5, get 50% off. or....spend £10 and you get 50% off..

version 2.
you spend £12..you get 50% off (which is £6). lets say you spend £30.. you'll get only £10 off as that's the cap.

can someone explain?

£10 is your maximum discount per person, so if you order the £30 steak, you'll be ponying up £20.

However, you can also use the discount with existing promotions and discounts. KFC are currently running a promotion for a ten piece bucket for £14.99, buy it to eat in and you should get it for £7.49 smile

Looks like the restaurants aren't passing on the VAT reduction. Guess this is being treated as a bonus for them rather than an additional demand stimulus.

How does this work? It says no vouchers, so how do I claim it? A place that's opening on the 31st is included so I'll be using this as an excuse to go.

The place claims it, you don't need to do anything.

So they just reduce you food (and soft drink) bill by 50% at the end, up to a maximum of £10 per person.

You can go as many times as you like during August (Mon - Web of course).

When it was first announced, it was implied everyone would be given a £10 voucher, but that wasn't right.

Seems a bit of a wet dream for a dishonest owner then. "Yes I had 100 people everynight"

Don't forget though that they will then be declaring the extra income to HMRC on their returns. Like much of the Covid legislation, it's a fraudsters pay day but HMRC are, apparently, starting to look into things a lot more now. We will see...

So next week we're going to see a bunch of people sat in KFC eating half price buckets on their own. I get that they want people to eat in.. but surely they should do if for collection too?

Collection has been available throughout so shouldn't have suffered. Getting people out and the confidence to continue going out is what its about, not sitting at home after a speed collection wearing a hazmat suit.

Why?
The scheme is trying to increase demand within the restaurant sector. By giving a food discount they hope more people will go out, and that they will also buy non-discounted drinks and stuff while out, giving an increase in takings.
What they are not trying to do is encourage people to eat at home drinking Tesco beer.

None of my local pubs are on it (yet), plenty of restaurants/cafes are though. Maccies and KFC (worst one I've ever been in, filthy, under staffed and terribly slow service, no chance) are as well.

One our locals has been a bit more enterprising and has made the same 50% offer Mon-Wed in July, unsurprisingly it's also been the most popular and was as close to a "normal" experience in a pub I've had since they reopened. Apart from signing in with name/mob and plastic screens in front of the tills there's been no difference. Some of the others have gone the other direction with stricter enforcement, not sure how long it will last as people have voted with their feet.

Is there an official app for this yet, where you can use your location to see what’s near on a map?

That seems to be a common theme; i.e. there are a set of regulations that have been issued, but it's down to each pub etc to interpret them, and they haev chosen different interpretations.

If they are too strict then as you say, will people put up with it all for any length of time ?
