Just looking for a little guidance because I enjoy curry but I don't eat it very often and, when I do, I pretty much always have the same thing - chicken dopiaza. I want to branch out and try something else but I'm not sure what I'd enjoy - I like medium-hot curries with lots of sauce, so any recommendations would be welcome, thanks smile

Home or Restaurant ?

Pre Covid, we used to eat at the local Curry houses frequently, and I nearly always try something that sounds different.

Its about the only way to discover new dishes.

My regular haunt often make me dishes they think I may like, that arent on the Menu.

Jalfrezi is the obvious answer and I believe one of these most popular curries in the UK.

You might also like a Goan fish curry or a Handi Gosht is you want to be more adventurous

My go to curry has to be Rogan Josh. I cook quite a few different curries but always gravitate back to this, especially a slow cooked lamb version.

Get yourself a few store cupboard ingredients such as-

Cumin seeds
Ground coriander
Ground turmeric
Garam masala
Paprika
Cardomom pods
Root ginger
Garlic cloves
Fresh Chillies and Chilli flakes

You’ll be able to cook most curry dishes from those few spices. Note no fresh coriander in there, can’t stand the stuff, but knock yourself out if you’re one of the weirdos that likes it biggrin

Chicken Tikka Dhansak for me every time.. Is sweet and sour in flavour and cooked with lentils. Just ask you host how hot you'd like it to be - they normally oblige..

Yep was going to write this aswell, love a Jalfrezi, only thing is if you like creamy curries, it isn't really for you.

I was the same once- either chicken dupiaza or chicken bhuna. My suggestion is therefore to try a bhuna.

(The alternative is a Tarka- it's like a Madras but it's a little otter.)

So my question would be, are you talking cooking at home or takeaways?

Ceylon Chicken

Medium Hot, creamy coconut.

Like a Korma, but with extra creaminess, sweetness and a lot more kick. Curry houses will often prepare it even if it isn't on the menu.

Dhansak is probably my follow-up choice.

There was a takeaway where I use to live that did a Chicken and Prawn Dhansak - it was delicously. Never seen it offered anyway since........

I'm a girl but the advice is sound! I've got curry on my mind for tonight and I am determined not to order a dopiaza biggrin

Only if it's run by true enthusiasts. Otherwise it will be the most expensive thing!

OP, you coud try Nihari for something different.

Karahi is also a sound choice.

As someone said earlier, slow cooked lamb is often better than chicken.

Lamb Achari is a good one, has lime pickle in it so has a nice sharp edge that cuts through the richness.

As said you can always ask them how hot/mild you want it to be. I quite often do this, especially when ordering a chicken chaat starter as they tend to be pretty mild so always ask for madras hot as I like the spice.

One of my favourite jokes, but should it be “like a Tikka”?
