Wikipedia says;
"Because of the strong smell, it is often eaten outdoors. The pressurized can is usually opened some distance away from the dining table and is often initially punctured while immersed in a bucket of water, or after tapping and angling it upwards at 45 degrees, to prevent the escaping gas from spraying any brine."

Wiki also says:
"Fermentation continues in the can, causing it to bulge noticeably, which would usually be a sign of botulism or other food poisoning concern in non-fermented canned foods. Species of Halanaerobium bacteria are responsible for the in-can ripening. These bacteria produce carbon dioxide and a number of compounds that account for the unique odour: pungent (propionic acid), rotten-egg (hydrogen sulfide), rancid-butter (butyric acid), and vinegary (acetic acid). Due to these gases, a thousand cans of surströmming exploded over a period of six hours during a fire at a Swedish warehouse in 2014."
and
"European Union
Due to being made from herring from the Baltic sea, surströmming today contains higher levels of dioxins and PCBs than permitted in the EU".

Ah Surstromming.
I have indeed tried this - perhaps I can assist?
OPEN IT OUTSIDE! The contents are under pressure and it will absolutely honk and most likely spit some of the contents over you.
The contents are not pleasant to look at and are markedly less so to actually eat (other understatements are available)
It tastes predominantly like the smell of burnt tyres - but this is where people go wrong. What you shouldnt do is eat a piece straight from the tin ala a load of youtube videos - but rather eat it as a smaller constituent of a meal, normally with bread or potatoes. Just like eating a lump of Gorgonzola or downing a bottle of tabasco is a bit 'much', trying to eat a whole fillet on its own is too.
That said - I did try it and it was utterly rank. Even my Danish mother turned her nose up at it. In the end only my brother and I were game and we were both of a very similar mind at the experience...
