Hi all,

My son has requested a special meal on his 13th birthday - he's really keen to try some King Crab.

I'm no stranger to buying and cooking live Edible crabs, but I've never served King Crab and only ever eaten them in restaurants in the US.

I'm pretty clear I want King rather than Snow - looks like I should be able to get enough for 3/4 people for around £80/£100.

Does anyone have any specific recommendations of online suppliers? Also looks like it is possible to buy frozen raw ones as well as pre-cooked - any idea whether it's worth the extra to do this?

Thanks in advance.

If buying frozen seafood - e.g. prawns, lobster etc then I always buy raw and not cooked. I've never tried King Crab, but I do like the look of it and would definitely buy it raw.

My local fishmonger seems to be a big seller of it although I've never tried it. Not a fan of crab. The other seafood he sells is excellent however. Might be with a look? https://www.kingcrab.co.uk

I use www.kingcrab.co.uk regularly.

Although they have had a covid enforced shutdown over the last 10 days.

You can buy cooked or raw King Crab for about £55 a kilo. ( both frozen ) A kilo feeds 6 easily as it is very rich.

A dip of Melted butter with lime and a side of french fries is all you need. Steam the cooked crab to warm it through or for about 12 mins for the raw version.

Their sashimi grade tuna is also a revelation. I have an order in for both atm.

Fantastic - that's just the advice I was after, chaps.

1kg should do us then - although we have a pretty big appetite for crab. Ploughed through these three (largest was 2KG) monsters before Christmas.

@Alvinsultana - does the crab arrive sufficiently frozen to put them in the freezer or are they already mostly defrosted?

Just working out the timing - would be easier to buy now and defrost when I need them if I can.

Everything I have ordered from KingCrab arrived frozen and went in the freezer.

Frozen in insulated boxes.

The crab defrosts very quickly in cold running water.

This was one of the two small king crabs we ate as part of a banquet meal served in HK (we visited in Nov and it was in season).
If you haven't eaten king crabs before, you really should try it if you get the chance!

Also, I recommend to buy raw/uncooked if you plan to freeze them.

Thanks for all the input, chaps - greatly appreciated.

I did order 1kg of raw, frozen king crab legs from kingcrab.co.uk - not convinced there will be enough for three gluttons, but we'll see.

I also ordered some frozen scallops (I've always only ever used live scallops since a horrible experience with frozen one 20 years ago so this is an experiment), a kg of uk crab claws and a couple of kg of fresh squid.

I'll post some before and after photos when we cook the legs up on the 6th Feb.

This stuff is fabulous with squid. Or chicken / beef / pork / veal strips.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kerala-Chinese-Chilli-Pep...

Slice thin rings as per Calamari, dip into beaten egg, then into a 50/50 mix of the spice and plain flour, then shallow fry for 1 min each side. Onto kitchen paper to drain then serve with sweet chilli sauce or jam.

Please do - am curious how much 1kg actually is!

Lived in Japan for a while and the crab there was epic.
