Why 2nd-best, I hear you ask. Well, the best garlic press a PHer can buy is, obviously, made from hand-mined osmium, brushed to a smooth finish with dodo feathers, but mine has a barely-visible scratch on the handle now, meaning that I can't possibly countenance using it again, and my private 6-engined Airbus A380 is in for a long service so I can't fly out to the secret remote Pacific atoll where they are made to collect a replacement at present......

Which brings me on to my question: what to replace it with? I'd like a decent hand garlic press where the clove doesn't get squashed upwards out of the sides when you compress it, and where it extracts most if not all of the clove rather than leaving a tidy amount in the press, even if you "over-press" the handles, if you know what I mean.

What do you have?

Surely as a powerfully built director you should either be crushing it with your bare hands, or you should have someone doing it for you?

Big hammer.

Although in fairness this is my go-to tool for many occasions...

I have one of these and it just does the job. Quite weighty and doesn't scratch up even when thrown in the drawer.

I got given this as a present, Dreamfarm garlic press (but showing out of stock at the moment)

https://www.johnlewis.com/dreamfarm-garject-self-c...

It's great, cleans very easily, retains the garlic skin and then has a convenient little button to 'pop' and fire it into the bin, which is satisfying.
It can occasionally come out of the sides, but only if you overfill it with more than two cloves really.
It's also reassuringly weighty, which I like.

Thanks everyone, some good options there, I’ll have a proper look at those. I must say the cheat’s option also sounds pretty good!

I use an oxo good grip press when I can’t be bothered to use a knife and it’s pretty decent.

Nah... Doesn't taste the same as freash.

The freezer sections do frozen garlic, ginger, coriander etc.

OP just use the flat of a knife. Gentle hit, then easily peel skin, and a quick chop. Far quicker than having clean a garlic press.

this

crushes better than most and the swing out press makes it a doddle to eject the garlic as well as clean it. way better than the price suggests, total bargain for a fiver.
