I've had some really epic deli sandwiches with this cheese in the USA, and it seems to crop up a lot in certain cookery TV programmes (admittedly mostly American).

Again I found it in my pre-packed deli salad yesterday and it was lovely - like a firmer and more flavoursome mozzarella - and yet I can't find the stuff anywhere to buy over the counter in the UK.

I find this unusual in this day and age where the broad range of UK supermarkets appear to cater for just about every cheesy perversion and you can go cross eyed at the choice.

Can anyone suggest an everyday outlet for provolone? if its genuinely not available in supermarkets can anyone explain why?

It's a protected name in the EU so only available from its home region so probably not easy to get hold of in great volumes - maybe it all gets exported across the Atlantic.

The Americans will just make their own version and happily call it 'provolone', similar how they make their own 'champagne'.

Thanks. Perhaps demand is so great there it outstrips supply, but its a shame someone like Waitrose couldn't find a bit of shelf space.

Not ordered from Ocado before, must remember drag myself into the new millennia.

Gouda or Emmental aren't a bad substitute

Yeah, I’ve used Gouda or emmental for those deli style sandwiches before

You can find it in Lidl during the Italian week. Sometimes they also do a spicy version.

Provolone is nigh on impossible to find. As is Pecorino for some unknown reason.

You'd think these would be regular items at supermarkets like Waitrose, but no.
