Hi,

Any suggestions where to buy spices like Garam & tandoori masala online?

I’ve bought them from ebay and Amazon but postage can make them expensive. I prefer to go to an Indian supermarket where they sell them real cheap and buy larger bags.

I enjoy going to the Asian supermarkets in Leicester to stock up on spices, curry leaves, Indian vegetables, proper naan breads & rotis, Indian snacks, paneer, Alphonso mangoes in season etc etc. Rajah & East End are good spice brands. Tesco & Asda’s big supermarkets round here also have good ‘world food’ aisles where they stock authentic spices. Some Asian supermarkets have halal butchery counters which sell goat meat, which is delicious.

Anywhere with a big Asian community should have similar shops, but obviously if you live in Cornwall or Norfolk you might be struggling.

If you buy a reasonable quantity and maybe a few other bits you can get free delivery on orders over £50 here...

Also, for "non-Indian" spices I use Holland & Barrett, especially with their penny sales it, works out pretty cheap.

Any Indian / Bangladeshi / Pakistani supermarket really.

Sell loads of spices so stock always fresh. Best prices. Decent sized bags.

Sometimes get good cooking tips from lady on till too.

If you're lucky and live in a high Asian population then the regular supermarkets are good as well. I can get virtually the same spices, including brands, in my local big supermarkets as my local Asian stores. There are some exceptions (dried Kashmiri chillis for some reason).

I really wish the big supermarkets would have a proper spice section rather than those small jars . . . . & who keeps buying all the dried parsley!

I found Morrisons okay for small packs of spices, in their "world foods" bit.

Or as above, Holland & Barrett

Thanks for the ideas, I’m in Crewe area and not aware of any nearby so might need to travel a bit further, plenty of polish shops though. puritandoors looks good so thanks for that recommendation and might give them a try as well.

I've found Asda change their stock to suit the local area best, so when I'm driving through certain areas of London I'll stop to get things.

Also the only supermarket I regularly see plantain in!

Yep
My butler goes to an Indian supermarket. Larger bags of spices are only €1 / pack, so about 10x cheaper by weight than a regular supermarket!

Sainsburys also have bags of spices, Fudco and Natco are the brand names to search for.

I have a well-stocked spice cupboard & prefer to make my own spice mixes, rather than buy them in. These guys have a good selection — and they sell lots of other useful ingredients. Delivery is free for orders over £20. I buy from them quite regularly:

Thats a good find. Very easy to spend £20 on there. Just need to throw out stuff to make room!

Fudco is meant to be the best brand. I buy it because that's what someone told me to be the case. Not sure if true

Stoke on trent has a high Asian population and will doubtless have many Asian supermarkets and sweet marts

Damn. Their camomile is incredible. Proper whole camomile flowers and they make the best tea. Yum

If buying large packets then check the use-by dates as the day will come when you realise the spices you're using are now three years out of date. I pour mine out into Dow Egbert coffee jars and cut out the spice name from the pack and put it inside the jar lid, then write the use-by date on the jar.

This is my local Asian supermarket.

They deliver although it would be cheaper at your local Asian place I would guess.
