I recently visited my 80 year old mother for lunch and she made a meal I've not had since childhood.
1 tin of pilchards in tomato sauce
Mashed potatoes
Mix, form into patties roll in flour and then fry until they've gone crispy.
Served with tinned marrowfat peas, bread and butter and brown sauce.
Bloody lovely.
I mentioned this to a few friends and they had never heard of fishcakes made with pilchards and turned their noses up (their loss).
Anyway all this jogged my memory to something nobody I've mentioned it to had ever heard of.
My Gran used to serve up for breakfast fried cornflakes.
Fry fatty smoked bacon cut into small pieces.
Add cornflakes and stir until mixed.
Serve with a fried egg
Again, as I remember, bloody lovely.
I am probably going to be surprised and within a few minutes someone will say we used to have that as well but nobody has so far.
Well that's enough of my meanderings.
