Does anyone have any general recommendations for good restaurants in central Birmingham (or short taxi ride)? Open to all budgets, and rather independents than chains.

A. Any cuisine
B. Good Indian food

I did want to try Opheen but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and they are the only nights I’m visiting next week.

Many thanks.

We went to Simpson’s last weekend, it was lovely. Short taxi ride out of town.

Adams was always really really good but I haven’t been recently, very central.

The Ivy is good for a nice dinner too, very central.

San Carlo, nice but can get hectic, very central.

If you're feeling an Indian, Lasan in the Jewellery Quarter is a good one.

If you want Punjabi style Indian with all the grilled meats rather than Anglo Indian fare, you can't go far wrong with Soho Tavern. Certainly not a luxury place, but the food is top notch

Akbar’s on the Hagley Road. Never had a bad one and loads of stuff you don’t see in a standard Indian

Otto for pizza. Located in St Paul's Square, Jewellery Quarter.

Personally I think the best Indian in Birmingham is Asha’s, and by some margin but it’s not cheap.

As mentioned, Simpsons is great, definitely consider Carter’s in Moseley (10 minutes in a taxi) and Folium in Jewellery Quarter. Chung Yin Garden is on of the best Chinese restaurants around if you want dim sum and something different from what you get is most restaurants.

Worth having a look at this as well

Not lived in Brum for 20 years now but I used to love the proper Balti houses on Ladypool Road. Not sure if this is still a thing now but superb curry with family naan bread as big as the table and no cutlery. Used to go most Fridays for a Balti low cost excellent grub. Happy days.

Lots of good restaurants around Colmore row. Ivy is always consistent, Tattu was great the first time but was looking a little tired the second time i went (sticky well used menu's pet peeve). Also a good steak restaurant i think Argentinian but can not remember the name.

Purnells on Cornwall Street (Colmore Row) or The Wilderness if you're into that kind of thing.

For Indian as another has suggested I would try "Balti Triangle" around Ladypool Road. It's a bit grim around there but the food is good.

It really the 'balti square' it used to be. There's very few curry houses anymore, it's moved on to cater for younger people, dessert shops, Turkish, lebonese etc.

Shabib I think it's called still exists, and as mentioned, adil's around other road is still open.

Went with Ashas in the end.

Great meal, we had the experience menu. They agreed to mix the platter course up so one had lobster and the other the lamb and then gave smaller portions of the kebabs than normal on each plate. Lobster was lovely, but the lamb was incredible.

Rest of the meal nice, absolutely stuffed by the end. Carb loaded for the next 2 months!!

The other night there ended up being a simple chain restaurant.

Cheers

Pleased you enjoyed it. I’m trying the experience menu next month. It’s not a cheap place but always great quality IMO hence I think it’s the best in Brum

Its a great place. My beef with the experience menu is that the desserts are rubbish. The have so many proper indian desserts on the menu and a platter of them but the choices on the experience menu are not those. I know they will probably sort it out if you asked but the real star of a decent Indian restaurant are proper home made desserts
