Wetherspoons Chicken Wings
Discussion
So, met a friend the other day, and we found ourselves in a Wetherspoons for lunch. Le Gavroche couldn't fit us in!
So he ordered a burger, which was perfectly adequate, but nothing special (£6.30 inc an alcoholic drink) and I went for chicken wings. 10 wings, plus a pot of hot sauce and a pot of blue cheese sauce, for the princely sum of £5.15. Wasn't expecting much, but wasn't overly hungry, so some budget battery farm scrawny wings with a few scraps of meat around a bowl of bones should be fine.
OMG, how wrong was I. These were the best chicken wings I've ever had, even better than Orange Buffalo in London E1.
8 of the wings were huge, the other 2 were a decent size. Loads of meat, beautifully cooked to crispy perfection in a fabulous coating, and the 2 sauces were just spot on.
Given that Wetherspoons food is normally consistent, if nothing else, I will try them again at another pub to see if they're as good. But anyway, if you're unfortunate enough to find yourself in Watford, the chicken wings at the Columbia Press are amazing.

'Spoons will be getting their food off the same Brake Brothers (or similar) truck as every other chain pub and restaurant in the town centre, so might as well enjoy it at the bargain prices they offer.
I suspect that due to their high volume of sales their food (and indeed beer) is fresher than most places.
In a lot of provincial town centres the Wetherspoons is the nicest pub with a wide demographic of customers.
Timbo Martin might be King of the Gammons, but the CEOs of other establishments are no doubt just as dreadful.

I’ve never understood the massive following for chicken wings. These are the parts that get thrown away surely?
Me neither, if we get a Dominoes, the wife always wants chicken wings as a side where I prefer goujons as you get far more meat and they aren't messy, I've never understood it, particularly as she's crap when it comes to eating chicken on the bone as she leaves alot of the meat behind. As for food at Spoons in general, for the price you can't beat it and it tastes OK.

I was just thinking the same, they're a by product.Having said that, as one of the only honkies that gets an invite to the local Thai full moon festival, I always surprise the Thais by joining them in the rush to the chicken feet at the buffet.
These are the likely candidates...

3 plates (30 wings) for under £11 - was a tenner pre-pandemic.
Always go down a storm with a few pre-match liveners.
I was looking forward post lockdown to going to Walkabout with a mate. On our last visit (20 months ago) they did a rather excellent Monster Munch Pickle Onion chicken wing bucket. Looking at their current menu looks like that's now a casualty so may well go and try the 'spoons ones.
Will be interesting to know if the supermarkets do any wings that are the same ones as no doubt 'spoons chicken wings are something that's in a fridge and chucked into an oven for x-minutes.
the supermarket frozen wings tend to take about 30minutes to cook.
the cooked 'ready to eat' fridge ones take 13-15min to heat. less to microwave

Tesco ready to eat hot and spicy.the supermarket frozen wings tend to take about 30minutes to cook.

Turn on grill.
Place on a plate / bowl, cover with cling film, microwave for 1 minute. Grill should be on the way to warming up by now.
Empty contents of microwaved plate onto a foil covered tray, shove under grill for a couple of minutes until crispy to your preference, turning to ensure even cooking and to avoid sticking to the tray.
Microwaving along makes them too soggy. Grilling alone leaves the middle a little undercooked.

As above Moy Park supply spoons. Their "hot and spicy" as likely to be a retail version unless spoons have their own recipe.the supermarket frozen wings tend to take about 30minutes to cook.
