Cooking a burger van burger at home?
Discussion
Is it easy to find the burgers they use at burger vans?
Sometimes, on a very rare occasion, I miss living near a football stadium where I could nip out to one of the vans on match day for that dirty half pound burger it seems only these vans can master.
Anyone ever cook these at home, or am I about to be laughed out of this forum?

What do you like about burger van burgers? I had home made burgers the other day, you can make burgers with very few ingredients depends how fancy you want to get - I suspect burger van burgers are not fancy. I like to toast the bun (usually a brioche bun - not very burger van), slice of beef steak tomato, mayo/burger sauce on the bun, slide of plastic cheese on the burger once cooked on one side (flip it and put the slice on so it melts over the burger), slice of raw onion.
The basis for these is this "recipe" - some people wouldn't put the onion in and it is a bit of a faff chopping it finely and cooking it first and letting it cool down:

Don't get me wrong, most of the time I bbq I'm using burgers from my favourite butcher (not actually made my own this year but I do usually) and going full on gourmet.
But I guess in the same way I do sometimes just need a Big Mac, there is just something about a burger van burger that hits the spot sometimes too.

I think you've just described the opposite of a burger van burger The basis for these is this "recipe" - some people wouldn't put the onion in and it is a bit of a faff chopping it finely and cooking it first and letting it cool down:

I'd always assumed they were frozen burgers from the likes of Costco etc.

They're probably the cheapest, frozen burgers they can buy in bulk.

Yeah that looks like the sort of thing. So pathetic and unappealing....but for some reason I want one right now. Find yourself a food wholesaler!

Sometimes a cheap greasy burger hits the spot. High rusk content (try panko breadcrumbs), onion salt and a little and tomato paste in 20% fat mince. Then mince it again or pulse in a processor once thoroughly mixed. Nice thin (1/4") 5" round burgers, hot pan, tin spec of oil, 30 seconds one side with a weight on it. Flip, 30 seconds more, weight off, cover with a lid for another 30 seconds. Rest in a warm over until just done enough to eat.
ETA: try Bookers for a selection of "burger van" burgers.

48 for £20 - bargain! Not sure I need a case though!! haha
Pretty nice margin when the quarter pounder costs 41p!

Costco? You'll be lucky...
I was going to say.....these guys aren't buying their "meat" from anywhere the likes of me and you have heard of....They want to bring profit to almost 100%, so they'll be getting their "stock" from the cheapest outlet they can possibly find in the local area.....same place that sells that super cheapo ketchup, that massive bag of 'almost' mouldy buns and the "do not sell separately" multi pack cans.
If your trying to replicate this at home, your going to want to check the ingredients to ensure it includes for adequate % of eyeball, hoof, anus, intestine, scrapings etc etc
All that said, you just can't beat a 1/2 pounder and chips served up in layby
sadly my missus really doesn't agree, so has to stay as one of those 'once in a blue moon' secret little things for me....ro250 said:

Where i used to live we had a discount butcher that used to have a van he sold stuff from at markets and car boot sales and when we visited his shop we bought a box of his budget burgers which were the kebab shop and burger van style and when cooked BBQ'd on cooked on the george foreman were just fine.
they also sold Blakemans frozen jumbo sauages which are the same as sold in many chip shops across the country.

I actually prefer the wide thin flat burgers that you get from burger vans cook nicely all the way through compared to the thick hockey puck style ones that are often over done on the outside to make sure the inside is done properly.
