Circulon Pan - Stuck on grease
Discussion
Hi all,
I've got a Circulon frying pan that we use for a lot of our cooking.
Recently it's non stick has stopped working and there appears to be a black film of grease stuck on the pan. I can feel it with my fingers and it feels tacky, and it doesn't seem to be where the non stick has come off. We've always washed it by hand and used silicon utensils, but this is seemingly new and it won't budge at all. I've tried washing it multiple times, boiling water and vinegar in it but this grease layer won't disappear. It's mainly around the edges and up the side, with a few small bits in the middle. Can be seen in the picture below
Anyone ever had anything similar? The frying pan is probably only 6 months old! The other pots and the wok we've got are all fine, albeit a lot less used than this. If it's knackered through something we've done I'll be really disappointed, especially as it was part of a moving in present we had to our new house.

Looks like damage caused by too high temps, resulting in the oil / food stuff becoming chemically bonded to the pan.I've got a Circulon frying pan that we use for a lot of our cooking.

Not sure what oil you’re using either, but never use the spray type in non-stick pans.

May I ask why? We have the same pan as the O/P and have just bought some spray-on oil, used it twice so far.
Not sure exactly which type you are using, but aerosol nonstick cooking sprays causes the type of issues the OP has described, and will also void the warranty with the manufacturer of your pan.https://support.circulon.com/support/solutions/art...
I personally wipe the pan with some kitchen roll dabbed with the oil to minimise the amount I use.
Regardless of how well you treat a non stick pan, they generally don’t have very long lives. A year of optimum use is quite good, after that they tend to generate little spots that stick here and there to delicate products like eggs and fish.

A paste of baking soda or soda crystals can be good for grease. A quick internet search suggests to me it doesn't damage non-stick i.e strong alkaline rather than acidic (vinegar) cleaner.
Clarify paste is to keep the material close to the dirt on a vertical surface, not to use as an abrasive means. Shouldn't need to use more than a sponge to wipe off.
Just soaking in a strong solution might do it too.
On the Circulon life in general - my partner's fave pan for omelettes and nowt but omelettes is one of these and it is still very unsticky. Despite looking worse than the OP's. Only wooden spatula, tiny amount of oil. Hand washed. It is always smoking hot before adding the eggs and almost max throughout the cook.
At least one a week for 15 years!
ETA soak.

think i had exactly the same pan, and it was crap.
Ended up binning it, and avoiding any circulon stuff from then on
How odd, I've had my two around 6-8 years. They're used on average once every fortnight and are like new apart from a bit of discolouration on the underside of the base.Ended up binning it, and avoiding any circulon stuff from then on

Not used any sprays, rapeseed oil is our go to for cooking with.
Guess I'll pick up some bio washing powder and give it a go.
Then high temperatures are your number one enemy.Guess I'll pick up some bio washing powder and give it a go.
Ingredients such as steaks or stir fry’s that require cooking at very high temperatures, especially with sticky sauces will kill the non stick coating.
Next time you need to purchase a non stick pan, keep the old one for just steaks etc, and the new one for other foodstuffs that require more gentle cooking like fish, eggs and sauces etc.

We have a similar pan that gets used for pancakes (so hot). A soak with washing powder and a scouring backed sponge get any black residue off - elbow grease required.
If you leave it to build up you're screwed IME (of other pans).
Getting the residue off isn’t really the issue. It’ll usually come off given the right cleaning materials and elbow grease as you mentioned. If you leave it to build up you're screwed IME (of other pans).
The problem is that very high temps kills the non stick coating, everytime you expose it to this type of heat it degrades the coating. So the problem is cumulative over time. Elbow grease will probably only exacerbate this. You’ll have a clean pan that has no non stick properties.
