Firstly I don't want pods. Full-stop. My wife has one. Hideous thing and taste.

5yrs I discovered I was allergic to caffeine. Now I've discovered I can after microdosing myself back on... So I stopped using this and to be honest I wouldn't reuse it after years of sat full of who knows what.

So what, to ensure I gain the best espresso etc should I buy?

I will watch this as I too would like to sea some recommendations.

I don't know if these are as good as the price suggests - they sure look nice:

I bought a Lelit Mara x a year ago from bella barista and it's very good.

Bought a grinder also.

It replaced numerous nespresso machines that kept breaking after a year and a 4 year spell with a delonghi bean to cup machine that also died.

Decided I wanted something with replaceable parts rather than sea of plastic and circuit boards inside.

It's a lot of money but it's certainly been well used.

Budget and type of coffee you want to drink is key to answering your question.

I also have a Mara X from Bella Barista. I'm very happy with it so far. The main coffee thread linked above has loads of recommendations too.

If you want an espresso machine you need to invest in a burr grinder that is suited to espresso.

I'm a recent owner of a Pavoni there is a thread on here with the exact machine I have, if you have the time in the mornings it is a wonderful experience every time. The first 20 odd cups are a bit iffy but far better than the Nespresso Vertuo I bought a week or so before it.
You have to buy a decent grinder I managed to get an unused Niche Zero off a guy on Facebook so for about £500 you get a decent grinder that works perfectly with the Pavoni. I bought my machine from Harrods who throw in 4 bags of of half decent beans that is if you like a large Latte because they are a bit strong.
But for a black espresso the Pavoni really brings out the smooth sweet flavour of a black coffee after a bit of practice.

That sounds good to me and it looks portable enough got me to take to work when I'm on an early shift
