Beginner bourbon

Just started trying drinking bourbon. only with coke at the moment am I a heathen? most probably

First bottle was buffalo trace and I really liked it can you suggest what to try next?

It's a great whiskey neat but the slight kick from the rye and the extra alcohol make it decent for mixing

Ive only just started drinking spirits so I'm easing my way In to it. All the whisky I have tried has been far too harsh for me even with a drop or 2 of water

I'm hoping if I try more I may finally start enjoying big boy drinks

Woodford reserve, quite a smooth one to start lessening the mixer

If you like it straight I've just bought a bottle of Angels Envy it is really nice. I've been a bourbon drinker for longer than I can remember and this is by far the nicest smooth drink to date. I have bought Blantons for ages but these days the price is 6 times what I used to pay so when my last bottle has gone I doubt I'll buy anymore due to the fine taste of Angels Envy. You can buy it for about £60 a bottle if you hunt around but again I've seen it at over £100.

Eagle Rare is good and not at all expensive. Same distillery as Buffalo Trace I believe.

Blanton's single barrel is very nice, but a little pricier and not as easy to find.

I think you can't beat Buffalo Trace at the budget end of the market. IMHO it's astonishingly good value, and tastes at least as good as bourbons that cost a lot more.

I have bought a few Bourbons to try over the last year and have to admit I just don't get it

So far I have tried:

• Wild Turkey Rare Breed (probably the best one)
• Four Roses Small Batch
• Woodrough Reserve
• Eagle Rare
• Knob Creek
• Bullit (very rough)
• Wild Turkey Rye (subtly different)
• Mellow Corn (Very sweet - not for me)

IMHO there seams to be very little variation in flavour (compared to scotch) and I have found some are just rougher or more watery (due to low abv) than others.

Technically not a bourbon but oh so drinkable, smooth tasty and just the right amount of burn

This. JD is my go to drink, if I’m having a drink, with diet cherry coke, just to upset the purists. I have quite a collection of some of the rarer JD releases, and have only collected them for the bottles, back when they used to produce some interesting items( Maxwell House bottle) Nowadays it’s just a normal bottle with a shrink wrap cover. Meh. The point however, is that none of the special releases have ever tasted any better or worse. I can’t get too excited about bourbon’s finer points, apart from its easy drinking.

House whisky tastes nothing like JD, why would that be a replacement? Diluting a spirit with coke does not remove the flavour of the spirit

I'm not fussed how people take their drinks but JD and coke is not good.
