Myself and madam have had a fairly crap time recently, so I’m planning a ‘luxury’ weekend away in Glasgow. All we need is a hotel and somewhere special to eat, daytime will be museums and wandering, no spa days.

Does anyone have any restaurant recommendations (preferably ones you don’t have to book months in advance)? Looking at about £60 per head for lunch excluding booze (I don’t know why, but neither of us like anything more than a snack in the evening).

A hotel recommendation would be good too, I’ve stayed at Malmaison for work before, which was ‘ok’, but I’m assuming at the weekend it will be full of tango ladies.

I’ve stayed in Malmaison Glasgow which was okay, not their best. There’s a Hotel Du Vin in the west of the city which is probably good going by the ones I’ve stayed in before. I stayed in the Apex City of Glasgow in October which I really liked. It’s on Bath Street close to the city centre, shops, bars and express bus link from the airport. Not much of a walk from Glasgow Central or Queen Street Station. I’d recommend it without hesitation. Great rooms, decor, welcoming staff. Decent restaurant for breakfast too if you’re staying in for that. For a decent restaurant and drinks I’d recommend The Anchor Line, really great food in the restaurant in the back of the beautifully decadent cocktail bar. www.theanchorline.co.uk The Apex is 10 mins walk away.

My recommendations are on the link the previous poster gave, but to step it up slightly for "luxury" have a look at Cail Bruich or Five March for food. I've not been to five march yet, but friends go often and love it. Cail Bruich just won a star this last year.

Enjoy your weekend - but unfortunately parts of Glasgow are looking very down at heel at the moment. Sad, really.

Depends what you are looking for, but if you are a carnivore like I am then the Mini Grill on Bath Street was excellent. Not been but I am also led to believe the Spanish Butcher is superb, and is sister restaurant to The Butchershop across from Kelvingrove Art Gallery (been to Butchershop).

Indian - Mother Indias Cafe is superb. Italian - Celinos on either Alexandra Parade or Dumbarton Road, alternatively the old stalwart Sarti has picked itself up by the bootstraps again - my last couple of outings there have been very positive. You are spoiled for choice, really you are.

Sugo and Paesano are brilliant, but not really a dining experience.
The restaurant at the Dakota is good and more of a dining experience.
Grace Dent gave a good review to Celentano.

Not sure what the PH opinion is of The Ubiquitous Chip, but I enjoyed it.

Two fat Ladies at the Buttery would be my choice for a special lunch.

We stayed in the Radisson Blu a few years ago. It was not amazing, but it was enjoyable.

When we arrived, the football was kicking out and we sat in the foyer with a bottle of wine pondering how Glaswegians really were all kilt wearing drunks.

By the evening, the place was transformed and we had a really good weekend. We ate at a number of intimate local eateries and the food was great, if stodgy. I put on a surprising amount of weight in two days.

I honestly wouldn't bother with Glasgow - and I say that as a (relative) local.

What's the budget and how far are you willing to travel?
