A friend has a big birthday coming up and has a liking for dark rum, but I know absolutely nothing about it and haven't been impressed when I've tried it.

So I need some help please!!

Agreed. Tried a fair few rums over the years and OVD always hits the spot.
Rarely see it outside of Scotland though. Reason?

Never been a fan of Rum but I've taken a liking to Centenario 12 years Gran Legado, available for just under £40 on Master of Malt.com

Don Papa without question.

Really smooth. I remember paying £40 or so at Majestic when it first came to the UK and thought that was a good deal. A 'sipper'.

When’s the Birthday?

Petrel for a fairly “plain” but smooth and fragrant Demerera rum, last batch all sold out, but you can preorder for the next bottling, which is due for April, according to this page https://www.falriverdistillery.com/shop

Mainbrace Navy Strength - Lovely as a winter warmer - https://www.drinkfinder.co.uk/p/118268/golden-rum/...

Keynvor is a lovely smooth honey and spice drink - https://mountsbaydistillery.com/collections/cornwa...

Drinkfinder is a great resource for researching gifts like this- https://www.drinkfinder.co.uk/

Ahh yeah… that stuff is amazing. Got put onto that whilst out in Germany, or at least I think I was Germany I can’t remember. :-)

These are my go to rums.
Another option could be Ron Jeremy, a nice rum plus a good talking point.

Just to put the other side, I bought a bottle of that as an alternative to Caribbean offerings and thought it was awful, a really odd taste. I bought a bottle in Madeira (they make their own there) and that was the only thing I recalled being close.

For the money I'd buy Black Bottle or XO but I baulk a bit as both seem significantly more than I recall they were.
