We've some vegetarians coming to dinner.

In my repertoire
I have a pea and potato curry that always goes down well.
And a dry methi chicken curry.
What can i substitute for chicken? (not really keen on paneer)
The other alternative is rustle up a mixed veg curry but that seems a little unimaginative.

Any ideas.

Also banana blossom might be a good sub, its a "vegan" alternative to fish when battered.

Jackfruit is the latest (UK) trend for substituting meat. Has a similar texture to pulled pork / chicken. Google Jackfruit curry for a plethora of recipes.

Personally if I’m having a veggie dish I prefer more vegetables. The best spring rolls and samosas are meat free.

I just use Quorn pieces, most vegetarians will have had these before they aren't actually too bad either. Can be marinated etc quite nicely. Don't over fry them though as they will dry out and go tough. When frying up onions etc in a curry I add the quorn just before any spices that need frying off and just before any gravy is added.

Beech and willow trees are likely hosts. Don't pick it from yew.

There is a lot of traditional Indian vegetarian food, I’d go that way rather than putting a substitute into a meat dish.

Do check first though - a small proportion of people have rather violent reactions to Quorn.

I'd go with more vegetables though. Vegetables are ace.

Chickpea curry is lovely. Easy to make. Fry onion, garlic and ginger for a few mins. Add spices and a can of chopped tomatoes and tin of chickpeas. Then add some spinach and yogurt at the end. Simples.

Seitan is probably best if you want to have something meat like.

Otherwise, I’m a big fan of chickpea and lentil curries. Mushrooms are good for a meaty texture too.

Cauliflower. Cut it into steaks and it works really well.

Tofu, I've only had it once but was surprised by it's pleasant texture and the way it takes on flavor, I think it is a good substitute for chicken.

If you're doing tofu, especially if you're going for a chicken substitute, it's all in the pressing.
