now in principle I think that this is a good idea since there are far too many pillocks who will not eat something on a given date (even though it's fine) because "...it's out of date..." - however the cynic in me can't help thinking it's a way for retailers to keep food out on display for longer without people being aware of short shelf-life...

Mrs Sammo and her Mum are a nightmare for chucking food away on the use by/best before dates! I’ve actually picked packets of food back out of the bin before because there’s nothing wrong with it!
I think this is a good idea and will hopefully stop people chucking away perfectly good food!

Some of the other supermarkets have already started doing it, all trials have been successful and mist customers are happy. I will give them them benefit of the doubt regards the potential quality issues and say good on them. Now let's get rid of all the unecessary plastic packs so we can inspect the veg to see if its in good condition like I can at my local greengrocer. I'm sure plenty on here will moan and be cynical and say its greenwashing and an excuse to sell old stock, but they would just moan about something else anyway.
