I just returned from a brief holiday in Berlin where I became acquainted for the first time with this simple delight.

...has anyone managed to authentically create it at home, it goes so, so, well with beer?

It's commonly served in Luxembourg and the Alsace region of France, too.
Ham hock.

In Luxembourg the best place to have this is Mousel's Cantine.
It's served with sauerkraut (with meat bits in it), broad beans (with meat bits in it) and sautéed potatoes with ... meat bits in it!
Oh, and half litre mugs of unfiltered beer.

Awesome stuff.

I saw your post OP and had to google it and found a few recipes/methods online. Looks pretty good stuff but need to order ahead from a proper butcher.

Lidl have i occasionally in Bavarian week.

Its ok on occasion in the right place, like a beer hall in munich, where it does the job perfectly, but too heavy for regular eating to my tastes.

I had one in Spandau at a beer garden and it was bloody divine, served with warm sauerkraut, the best crackling I have ever had and the meat just fell apart. Yes, and the obligatory Helles bier, brewed on the premises!

...I'm not usually keen on stuff where you have to pick around bones but this was lovely.

I'm going to see if my local bucther can fix me up with a few 'knuckles'!

You got lucky in Berlin - their local version of pork knuckle (called Eisbein) is boiled rather than baked as schweinshaxe is normally in Bavaria. Despite being a massive lover of all things pork, I wasn't a fan of the slimy boiled version.

Amusingly, South Africans seem to refer to all German pork knuckle as Eisbein and are often bitterly disappointed when they order it in Germany. biggrin

I noticed the Sausage Man do a pre cooked version. I haven’t tried it, though their sausages are excellent. I enjoyed schweinshaxe on a trip to Munch a few years ago, washed down with litres of Augustiner Helles!
