I have a conventional size electric oven, and when cooking instructions say '30 mins at 180C' I start to think of how much energy it's using to heat one item.

Does an air fryer replace an oven? Does it use hot air, or oil or both...?

I have a microwave of course but it's not suitable for everything.

Long old phone in on R2 maybe last week with Vanessa phellps

In brief , yes they save a lot of money over an oven. But I don’t have one to tell you for real !

We have just bought one. We are a family of four.

Only had it a couple of weeks. We have cooked pizza, waffles, roasted veg, sausages, sausage rolls, veggie spring rolls, veggie nuggets and all have been excellent (frozen or not). Tastes better than the soggy mess our conventional oven churns out too. Cooked in about half the time of our fan assisted oven ,so saves time as well as energy. They are quite small, so the pizza needed cutting into quarters before cooking, for example.

It does cook far quicker at the top than the bottom so the shelves need rotating half way through. Fat just drops through, so I imagine it is healthier than using a baking tray. We haven't added any oil yet and just dry fry.

Alledgedly it will cook a whole chicken but not tried that yet.

Overall, very impressed with it so far.

Yes it replaces an oven and is much more efficient for just one item, less energy and faster. You can use a small amount of oil on some things like chips, but no more than a teaspoon, you dont cook anything actually in oil in it, they shouldn't really call them "fryers" as its a bit misleading. Basically its a mini electric fan oven.

For one person or just to do one part of a meal then a single compartment model is adequate. If you have a family or want to do a whole meal in it then look for a larger model with a dual compartment. Then you can do potatoes/veg in one side and meat in the other.

If I was living alone I could easily manage with a microwave and air fryer, no need for a full sized oven consuming 3000 watts just to reheat a meal or bake a potato.

Bought one a month ago and it's had near constant use. Both for meals and snacks. Really enjoy being able to cook a single croissant super quick.

It's small but quick enough that you can cook stuff in batches as you go. Eg sausages then let them rest whilst the chips cook

Yes it's just a tiny oven with a strong fan. The fryer bit is just branding I think.

So can anyone put one of those energy meters on one and can tell us in kWh how much electricity it uses to cook some typical meals - as everyone seems to be going on about them.

I've got a deep fryer for chicken balls, chips and samosas etc. I did this basket which was enough for four people in about 4 minutes (because they are thin) which used .45kWh which is 12.5 pence at the current 28p capped rate - chips would take about 8 mins.

Clearly you can only cook certain stuff in a deep fryer - but it does come out tasty.

It replaces most things you'd use an oven for. After constant use since getting ours a month or so a go we had to use the oven for the first time in a while to make a cottage pie..... so home made in a tray type meals such are lasagne etc you need a normal oven.

I bought a Ninja Foodie Health Grill and Air Fryer last month and it’s really very good.

I’d say the best thing about it is staggering home drunk at midnight and fancying something dirty to eat. From thinking about a fish finger sandwich to eating a fish finger sandwich is about 11 minutes!

It does decent chips from scratch, excellent crispy chicken wings, very good air fried sea bass or salmon and grills vegetables nicely. I don’t like the way it cooks steak or burgers, but I’d never cook those on anything other than a bbq anyway.

It does, however, stink the house out and it’s a better fryer than it is a grill.

On the whole, I really like it.

I have an air fryer, that's what it's called by the manufacturer, but it doesn't use oil or fry. It's a mini fan oven and it's great. Tower 11 litre unit. Heats from cold to 180C in less than 2 minutes and I can cook things in about half the time of the oven. Haven't really used the 'proper' oven in weeks.
