As there has been a bumper crop of mushrooms this year (see mushroom thread), we bought a dehydrator.

It's fun! Have been wandering around doing different things: Mushrooms, Bananas, Chestnuts, Acorns, Chicken strips (supposedly for the dog as treats, but wow they are nice).

Anyone have any more suggestions or 'unusual' things I can dehydrate?

Not "unusual" but tomatoes. I do big batches then keep in oil with herbs etc They actually freeze okay as well.

Didn't think about that. We have lots of tomatoes from the garden, more than any other year, and I've been jarring them using an instant pot.

Slices of sweet potato. Our dog loves those as crunchy treats.

Roast and grind them for coffee substitute. Dehydrate and use as flour in cake and bread recipes.

I’ve read about those uses, never known anyone to try them - is it good?

I always assumed acorn coffee was a wartime substitute that was used in desperation.

Wife has just got a dehydrator, so far just used for apple slices.

It has a pleasant taste, not a substitute for real coffee if you want a caffeine hit in the morning.

In general just decided to do a bit more foraging as a hobby — its amazing the things you can eat that actually taste quite good. Made stinging nettle cake, just harvested a bunch of rose-hips to make into jam.
