Can’t find it in the big supermarkets anymore, has it become niche or another casualty of brexit?

Agree. As a Brit living in Canada, I do miss some good English cheese.

Yeah I used to get it in Tesco. It was nice and strong. I can't remember when I saw it last though.

Yeah that's the stuff, I must have gone for it as it had the highest strength number.

That seems likely yes, Now that I'm thinking about it I remember the one I used to get was really strong and had little hard "crystals" of some sort adding to the tangy flavour. No idea what they were maybe some cheese expert might pop up to tell me smile

Sainsbury's used to sell in similar themed but different pack/label for each variant, range of cheddars about 15 years back, Canadian, irish, mull of somewhere scottish, somerset and maybe one or 2 more, all of different characters and strengths, don't think they do anymore.

Canadian cheddar has a reputation for being strong (i think) (but of course that's just the type and level of maturity they commonly exported over here, as in Canada it come in all its variants), but i'm sure there's a British cheddar that ticks the same box's if you sample a few!

Never heard of that store. Quick Google tells me there is only one in BC... and in a small town, in the middle of nowhere.

Waitrose sell a very good crystalline Cheddar cheese. Failing that try some of the Snowdonia Rock Star, very nice!

I've been eating Sainsbury's Canadian Cheddar for over a decade. Or at least I was until around the time of Covid it vanished from the shelf and hasn't returned.

Nothing else like it.

Thanks. I'm going to have to check those out I think. I know there will be British cheddars that are very similar to the Canadian one I remember, so a good starting point.

Our Costco stocks Colliers Welsh cheddar, its as close to Cathedral City as I can get, although it transpires CC is available here now , as its owned by Saputo, a major dairy/food co here in Canada, but like all dairy here its expensive.

Just buy British Cheddar
Why haul it from the other side of the world.

Oh

And read labels
There’s one I bought once states on labels something like “ contains cheese made in various countries “
From that I’m assuming it’s reconstituted.
Yet the branding was misleadingly English looking
McClellands extra strong is a good basic one that sounds like what you want . Made in Stranraer a great milk producing area.

The last time I heard of it was from Maureen Limpan in the 1980's BT advert!
