My wife, my son and I all have a Tesco card and use scan and shop. Obviously, when applying for the card, you provide all your personal details. My wife & I have never been security checked when using scan and shop. But obviously we've seen other people being checked. I always assumed it was random, and just checked maybe 1 in 5 customers. But when my son got his own place and his own card, he gets security checked every single time he shops. An assistant has to come over and scan 15 or so items of his shop to ensure he's scanned them whilst shopping. I'll add that he's never had an issue and scans everything in his trolley.

So I'm wondering, is it random, or are the machines set for "check single men under 30" for example. Or check single mums, or the unemployed?

Not sure, if my hunch is right, if I'm angry about it or not. Would just like to know if it's random or targeted towards certain demographics?

Daughter's in her 30's - married with kids - she was saying the other day she gets checked everytime she uses it.

A few weeks ago her total was around £40 when it should have been £100 ish - she told a member of staff, who rescanned the whole lot and it still came to £40. They seemed baffled and told her to just pay the £40 and go. So she likes it again now!

I'm sure it must do something to assess the risk of 'errors', even if it is down to which items you buy - eg. buying multiple items of something that has a wide range of prices such as wine where you could scan the cheaper ones and put the expensive one in the basket.

There's probably different rules between stores - ones in nice middle class areas might stop less people than ones in city centres.

Slightly different problem. Since lockdown in 2020, I can no longer just swipe my debit card in Lidl, I have to put in the pin every time. I don't have that problem in any other shop.

Yes, it could be set to "scan everyone spending more than £10 on alcohol". Because the check request comes up after you've uploaded your scanner to the machine. But by and large, my son buys similar stuff to us, but less of it. As we're shopping for 3 (inc his younger brother) and he's just shopping for 1.

We use it every week, haven't been checked for ages. Last time I was checked it was when I'd popped in quickly and bought some stuff that wasn't "normal" for us.

I suspect there is some logic that looks at what is normal for you based on the huge amount of data the gather through clubcard, and how you are using the handset - we have been checked when we have put back items and deleted them from the handset - either because we've scanned to many items when buying multiples or because we have found a better option for something we have previously picked up.

I get checked every so often in waitrose but a couple of years ago they changed it from a full rescan to a random scanning of some items. Number of items they randomly scan varies from 10-28 for me. The other day it was 28 items which I queried but the lady didn't have an explanation.

Still, didn't take more than a minute or two which is fine every now and then.

Many years ago I kept being rescanned every visit and was told there had been some discrepancies. I am very careful with this stuff and just did not accept it and so they reset something on my account which reverted me back to checks every so often. I think there was a problem with their system rather than me having stuff in my trolley that I had not scanned.

I seem to get a rescan when I've only bought about half a dozen items, my big shop doesn't seem to trigger it.

I wonder therefore if someone buying only a couple of items is more likely to have nicked a couple more than if you're buying loads!?

In other stores that do the same thing you don't need a card registered with your details like the Tesco card, you can just pick a handset up and shop and bag as you go.

I presume they all work off the same or very similar systems, if so that would throw the demographic theory out.

Is this at the self serve? If so are you sure you selected the contactless payment and not credit/debit card I did this the 1st time i used and had to insert my card and pin. Next time I noticed there where the 2 options and just had to tap to pay when selecting the contactless button.

No, mine's always at the proper till. Co-Op self-serve asks for P.I.N. most of the time though

Which stores are those? Sainsbury's runs off the Nectar card, Waitrose off John Lewis card.

You should form a Facebook group.

There must be lots more people with this very same predicament.

Maybe also contact the Daily Mail.

It is both, at the self scan and at the manned till.

I will, as long as they show pictures of my sad, compo face. I will also insist that they pay me compensation of a weekly supply of luxury, mini stollen bites.
