Mulled wine experts?
Discussion
'Tis the season so about time I got around to making some.
Any pro tips? Having never done it before I thought you bought specific bottles of mulled wine, like this: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-mu...
But a few recipes I'm reading are just saying normal bottles of Italian red? I have a lot of normal red so happy to use that instead of a specific 'mulled wine'

Buy the spices in bags - or make your own bags from muslin - and soak these in the wine at least overnight.
Microwave to heat, add a shot of brandy if you want.
Basically you don't want it in a pan boiling off all the alcohol.
I would use a decent wine for this. Not Petrus 1983, but something you'd happily drink on its own.
Try mulled cider. Weston's Vintage at 8.2%. It's epic.

I don't own a microwave, so it'll have to be a pan, but yeah def don't want to be boiling off the alcohol! Microwave to heat, add a shot of brandy if you want.

Interesting recipe here making a bit of a syrup: https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/...
Thanks for the tips/inspiration. Just made the Jamie Oliver mulled wine - delicious. Used an orange instead of the 3 fruits, skipped the bay leaves. Making the syrup before adding the majority of the wine gives it a silky feel in the mouth. Will probably cut the sugar by 25% next time and see if there’s any significant difference.
Also bought a couple of bottles of the Weston vintage cider, will mull some tomorrow.
