We have a few friends coming over, and rather than the sit down meal, especially because it is a long evening, I was thinking of keeping it informal and doing smaller plates through the evening.

Initial thoughts are;

Small prawn and salmon cocktails
Yorkshire puds with steak and horseradish
Smoked mackerel pate on toast
Blini with quails egg, fake caviar and tarama

…but I probably need 7 dishes.

Before I dive into the recipe books…what do you all think is your favourite for this sort of thing?

Blinis with Philly and salmon eggs and a really thin slice of lemon

Mini burgers. Pre-make and zap in the oven before serving. They only need to be warm, not hot.

Cyprus pork keftedes with tzatziki dip

Egg and cress sandwiches? I don't like them but girlies seem to be happy paying £££ for a hotel high tea.

One that goes down well in our house is a little cube of black pudding and a bit of bacon on a small square of toast. Pop a poached quails egg on top for the full mini breakfast experiencesmile

Had a taste off of Colston Basset and Forme D'Amber. I won't say which came out on top but I am miffed.

That is food porn right there. I once had a starter in a local restaurant which was simple but probably the best starter I have ever had - pigeon breast with black pudding and a poached quail's egg with a red wine jus.
