It's been a long time since I did a monumental fk up in the kitchen, but this week was a disaster, all from one mistake.

Mrs UTH got me Jamie's One Pan Wonders cookbook for Xmas, made a couple so far, decided to make this one again: https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/lamb-recipes/g...

Mrs UTH asked what we needed, told her ingredients including 'lentils'. There's my error....I didn't specify a tin of lentils. So she comes back with a back of dry lentils. Now, I've never cooked with lentils before, apart from the previous time cooking this recipe where I'd done the shopping and got a tin of lentils.

So I figured that dry were the same as tinned really, so I put 400g of dry lentils in with the mince and mashed it all together and formed the meatballs. It did occur to me that they looked somewhat too 'lentil-y' but thought that somehow in the cooking it would magically change.

Long story short, I ended up with 6 GIANT balls of solid lentils with a bit of what used to be lamb mince in there somewhere. As you can probably imagine, the lentils were still hard and crunchy, moisture no longer existent in the balls, and basically inedible. All this because of not specifying we needed a tin of lentils.
Lesson learned I guess, but seriously disappointing on a day where I'd eaten nothing all day and was starving.

No real point to posting this, just sharing my idiocy.

Oops! laugh

In response to the title, I would simply reply: "Get my step mum to cook it." wink

I was making refried beans once and went for the cumin, didn't notice until after I'd put a bunch in that my partner had reused a jar and helpfully marked the black label with a black sharpie.

This is how I found out that chinese five spice might work quite well in refried beans but not in quantities where the clove is numbing your mouth laugh

Done similar before using dried kidney beans instead of tinned kidneys beans in a chili. Wasn't a total disaster though, just meant we had to find something else for tea that night and continue cooking the chili for hours till the beans softened up.

Managed to sprinkle Lee & Perrins on our chips instead of vinegar. My 8yr old son didn't even notice!

That doesn't sound bad, in fact I wouldn't mind trying it.

One way to ruin your dinner is to post a pic of it in the dinner pic thread and all the Gino d'Ramsay Olivers slag it off .

At uni I used salt instead of sugar to make the apple filling for a pie....why salt was being stored in a bag i'll never know.

Ruined the date when I'd really made an effort that...

It works... think Worcester sauce crisps. Used to be the norm when I was a kid, same on Chinese takeaway in lieu of soy (same stuff according to my Mum).

I never like making the same thing twice, tried a recipe for something along the lines of polenta-crusted cod.

Has gone down in family folklore as the time Dad made us eat sand.

if it helps, my wife once made us a bolognese and decided to spice it up with a little chilli flake. She managed to accidentally unscrew the lid of the jar and dump a brand new full jar in, she then pulled the lid out and just stirred it in.

Of course I ate it all

Missus told me she was making corned beef hash, apparently she said mash and I ended up with a load of mashed potato in a bowl mixed with corned beef. Was weird.

Haha my wife did similar, but with a whole tub Philadelphia cheese......no idea why she was putting that in at all, let alone letting the whole tub slip in. We did not eat it.

My wife is also guilty of something similar. About 10 years ago she managed to dump the entire contents of a sea salt grinder on her roast dinner, in her defence she was raised on Saxa table salt, has some health problems and less than brilliant co-ordination and when asked how it works I simply replied "twist the end".....

She has never touched a salt grinder again and I now have a meal time job for life!

I actually like a splash of Worcester sauce on my chips now and again!

It works well with say a mixed grill

Mrs UTH wants the successful version of this tonight.

She's off shopping now. I have even shown her a picture of a tin of lentils, exactly where to get them in the shop.....here's hoping.

I just bought a bag of yellow split peas, like lentils. Pack doesn't say how to cook them, but does emphasise "do not eat raw". Simmer for 20-25 minutes till soft but not slurry I'd expect

I can certainly confirm that even 45 mins in an oven does nothing to stop them being raw!

Aye pre simmer them before you put them in whatever you're making. Worth it even if you're planning to slow cook as they'll get cleaned in the water and not leave a load of scummy foam over the top of your dinner.
