I’m in England on holiday and have now been to a restaurant serving 1/3, & 2/3rd pints and a pub with pint glasses marked with 2/3rds too. Is this a new thing?

Micro brweries and craft beer pubs offer 1/3 pints, so you can taste several different beers.

It's apparently rare but perfectly legal.

We boycott pubs that do this hehe

2/3 is normally the same price as a pint elsewhere!

In terms of weights and measures, it has always been "a thing".

I used to see 1/3 pint glasses / schooners fairly regularly, but can't say that I've seen them much in recent times.

Not in my experience - normally on craft beer establishments it's done because 2/3rds keeps the price looking reasonable, whereas a full pint is enough to make you think twice about buying... It uses to be pretty good at keeping the price under 4 quid compared to a fiver plus for a pint...

It’s not to do with the price looking reasonable. Craft beers can be quite high in alcohol. It’s quite common for anything over 8% to be served as a schooner (2/3’s).

Fuego sell 2/3 pints and have done for a few years now. They are located in Fenwicks Dept stores.

Never heard of it but it would never enter my head to ask for anything other than a pint I suppose

Exactly, sack drinking a pint of 12% imperial stout! 1/3 is plenty.

I've noticed the 1/3 thing in many craft bars and, yes, it normally applies to stronger beers but I would agree with my cynics hat on it's all about making some of the outrageous prices charged for hipster type beers more palatable fiscally than anything else.

There really isn’t much profit in craft beer. You make far more off spirits in a bar. If it’s expensive it’s because it’s taken a lot of time and ingredients.

Another reason that traditional pubs are closing, yet gastro ones are thriving. The margin is elsewhere these days.

I don't mind halves of high percentage beer as long as they are half the price of a full pint.

Found this place quite odd as they had halves of even low percentage beers, prices were very decent so no issues just buying a full pint imo.
