Just came across this enormous beef joint, and indeed it does actually look like a Thors hammer.

Weighing it at over 8 pounds (or the equivalent of 33 1/4 pounders!) its an absolute beast. Thinking about this for Christmas Eve so that the Dog gets its best Christmas present ever lol. The leftover bone would make my own mouth water, let along the dog!

There's something 'Fred Flintstone' about it which I find quite appealing smile

It says it serves 8. At over 8lbs in weight, I'm not sure on the maths tbh wink

Does look impressive, but cooked bones shouldn't be given to dogs.

Beef shin. Just about the cheapest beef on the carcase.

Wouldn't touch that at half the price. Just give the whole raw thing to your dog. Cheap nasty stewing beef made to look like a mouthwatering bone in rib.

There's a reason it comes with extra stuff to make it taste nice.

Nothing wrong with shin when cooked properly, although the one in the OP is just Tesco marketing something to make it look better than it is

Which was my point.

It's stewing beef. It'll never be anything else.

It’s been slow cooked already for 10 hours, so the sinew etc shouldn’t be too bad. Looks like you just warm it through at home with the sauces.

My Mrs prefers the textures on meat joints like this (she loves oxtail for instance) so depends on your tastes.

TBH, I’d rather source something like this from a quality butcher and slow roast it at home, rather than get something pre made at Tesco. I haven’t had the best experiences with their pre cooked food.

Looks like it's already been cooked sous vide.

I have seen them popping up in the (US) world of smoking, but never over here. I guess a butcher would sell you one.

Getting them to make osso buco isnt easy either.

My dog is a Pug, I think the bone is bigger than her. I'm talking about giving her the meat on the bone, rather than her actually eating the bone, which would be impossible I think. Is it still harmful for them to eat around it, despite not actually eating the bone?

Its not quality I have in mind with this, its the fun of having a big centre piece on the table, and getting stuck into it like a Flintstone on Christmas eve biggrin

Previous years we've done proper rib roast (much better quality of course) but thats not as cool as a Thor's hammer IMO.

People don't buy Christmas crackers for the toys inside, thats kind of just the Christmas fun mentality that makes us buy stuff that doesn't make the most sense, isn't it?

Slightly smaller, but quite a bit cheaper.

So you're going to give the leftover bone to the dog.

Cooked bones will splinter , do not let your dog near it .

Yup, it's a cheap cut and needs slow cooking, but it should be very tasty. I use shin meat in my bourguignons and often in a ragu.

Thank you. A straight up answer rather than a snide remark.

I honestly didn't think it would be an issue.

Yes, a small pug with a bone bigger than her, although I see you edited out the breed of dog lol.

If you want to play one upmanship, take the win, it's yours.

Shin is really nice slow cooked, but you need you need to do it yourself so you get the marrow rendered out of the bone.
It's half the price in waitrose, tesco are really taking the piss!
