Slightly odd one, I know.

Making food for my marine aquarium. Following a video, except they showed a regular food processor with grater attachment - and I've just tried that and it's utter gash.

Trying to grate about 750g each of scallops, prawns, tuna and whole squid. All frozen and cut into chunks to fit in the feeder of the processor.

Except that about 50% just gets dragged between the wheel and the lid. The tuna won't grate at all (maybe I need to deskin it? That'll be fun!). Haven't even tried the squid.

Currently, the house stinks like a dressing room in a naval town strip club. I've spent an hour achieving fk all. The freezer is full of stuff staring at me and calling me a failure.

Any tips?

What sort of machine do you have? Is it viable to grate what you need as you need it by hand on a box grater?

Try the food processor with just a normal cutter. A quick pulse should give a fine enough dice. Just dont over load. Little amounts. Just keep it all frozen as you dice it.

Kenwood food processor. Fairly routine sort of thing - picked it up of Facebook marketplace as I figured I'd never get the smell out of it!

Not sure I can do 3kg of frozen fish grating on a box grater!

Will this not just turn it into a paste?

I'm aiming for small but defined 'bits' that get mixed up with a load of other stuff then frozen in thin sheets.

Literally pulse the machine for noy even a second. It will be fine. Just make sure the fish is proper frozen when you do it.

"Our top tip is to make sure the meat is cold (but not frozen) as this makes it easier to process."

Holy Carp!! Are you really intending to grate frozen scallops to feed your fish? Isn't that putting pearls before swine?

Either way, I have a 1971-vintage Robot Coupe Magimix and with one of the grating discs makes easy work of rock hard blocks of dried Parmesan. I can't say I've ever tried grating fish but there is a small gap of about 2mm between the disc and the lid and so there's a risk it might make fish mush.

Let it thaw very slightly - say in the fridge for an hour as you'd do with hard ice cream - then get your sturdiest knife and chop it.

idea that I think would definitely work. If your fridge/freezer has an ice maker then lob it in there and use the crush setting thumbup

OP is it you who has the Thermomix? If you can get it down to say fag packet size, it will work in that. I’ve used the Thermo to crush granita and it worked well. Speed 10, 10 seconds. It will sound like you’re blending wheel nuts, be warned.

I grind 12-14kg of Meat, Chicken bones/wings and organs to feed my cats. Semi-frozen and raw. Against the recommendations, and have been doing so for nearly two years every 8 weeks.
