What’s this stuff used for?
I only ever use it to dip sliced toasted pitta bread in.
Are there any other culinary uses I’ve missed?
Genuine ask.

Thanks

It's a complete protein, combined with wheat.

As are innumerable other 'poor people's foods' around the world, if you think about it: beans on toast, refried beans and tortillas, dal and chapatis, hummous and pita, Egyptian ful medames and flatbreads.

ETA: falafel and flatbread.

My 9yo has it every day in a folded flatbread for school lunch, he loves it. It’s somewhat more cosmopolitan than the jam sandwiches I had in the 1970s.

Hummus with a little minced beef or lamb sprinkled on top is spectacular. Sometimes an option at Syrian or Lebanese restaurants. It's just unbeatable.

But yeah, it's a mezze (share plate/dip/etc) most often. Traditionally for dipping pita bread in but popularized in western countries for dipping carrots, etc in it.

Spread it on crackers instead of butter/margarine and on toast if I'm having egg on toast

I've certainly never considered dipping my plums in the stuff.

We normally have some kicking around, gets mixed into sauces etc to thicken them if its going to waste.

I love it as a topping on a baked sweet potato.

The price of both Hummus and Tzatziki has gone up quite a bit in recent years although they do seem to be falling now.

I hope it doesn’t cause a double dip recession.

You can use it as a kind of sauce for chicken, or in a salad, or in a wrap with both.

The one above looks too watery to me.

I have red pepper hummus with smoked mackerel fillets. Chickpea flour makes papadums as well, miracle food.
